Man arrested for burning kitten on grill July 16, 2002 Posted: 4:03 PM EDT (2003 GMT)
A neighborhood friend of Sherry Scott holds the kitten they named 'Lucky,' in a recent handout photo.
LIBERTY, Missouri (AP) -- A man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly burning a kitten on a barbecue grill as several other people stood around and watched in amusement.
A witness pulled the scorched, 7-week-old tabby from the hot coals, but it was severely injured and had to be put to death, police said.
"They kept saying, `Meow, meow,' and they were poking at it with a stick," said Sherry Scott, who burned her hand grabbing the kitten.
Charles C. Benoit, 24, was charged with animal abuse, punishable by up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine. He was jailed on $10,000 bail.
Jim Roberts, spokesman for the Clay County prosecutor's office, said he does not expect anyone else to be charged, because no witnesses could identify the others.
Scott said that on Friday night, she saw 10 or 12 people at the barbecue grill in the courtyard of the apartment complex where she lives. Scott said she asked what they were cooking, and they said it was a cat. She said the group taunted her, daring her to rescue the cat.
She said the group scattered when she threatened to call police. She said she pulled the kitten from where it had been shoved into the coals at the back of the grill. Its tail, whiskers, fur, eyes and throat were scorched.
"I called him Lucky because I thought I got him out of there just in time," she said.
Scott said she and other residents stayed up Friday night trying to nurse the kitten with an eye dropper of milk. But animal control officers decided that because of its respiratory injuries and inability to swallow food, it had to be destroyed.
"If you would have seen him, you would have cried," said Sheri Simpson, one of the residents who helped care for the kitten.

LOL...I was gonna go to bed, but now I have to stay up to read your reaction to the part about how he should be free as long as he sticks to torturing animals and not people, because nothing in the Constitution says it's against the law to torture animals for fun.
Now lets see what the heck yall people will say about my post... Ahhh, as expect. Total misrepresention...
You are a sick puppy, too...about as bad as RobRoy. What makes you think that people who detest people who enjoy torturing anything and/or anyone (actually, around here, we just pound them when we catch them, because sadists generally hate pain) are PETA activists or are somehow "for" abortion?
CC, I would like to point to where I mentioned Peta or abortion. I think you cleared your eyes you would see quite clearly that I infered that people will put MORE emotion into a cat or dog post (sad as it may be) that into issues that concern Human Beings. Please do everyone a favor, quote parts of my posts in which you make assumptions. Kind of like I did for you in this responce. Thank you !
I prefer my rabbit killed quickly and cleanly before it's grilled. No pain for the rabbit. Food for me.Fine, I have no problems with that. Perfer what you will, sometimes the kill is not clean, does that mean you are a Satanist? Not in my book. Would you perfer the fellow quick kill the animal first?
My point is that I was NOT defending what the jerk did, but pointing out that that I got grilled worse in making the point that animals have No Soul.. If you can point out a Biblical verse that they do, I would like to see it.
However, this isn't a hunting OR an abortion issue : it about this guy's sadistic act, and the group of co-sadists who enjoyed watching it, rather than stop it.
Again, where in my post do I bring up the abortion issue (I am pro-life BTW). My point is all issues about people rank over animals. I did not say that this sick person was right to do what he did, only that people (you make my point perfectly, thank you) often will rank animal life above human in many issues.
Both of you should seek professional help.
Which Vet do you recommend? I am sure you have His number on speed dial. BTW, I worked as a vet assistant for a couple of years. I have held more dying animals than you will ever touch. I held some to their dying breath. I have great love of animals, but I also have perspective. God gave us animals, but he gave us something special. A soul, and made us in HIS image. Take that great passion of yours and curtail it into something useful, like understanding a post and love of your fellow mankind even more than those animals. A soul is a precious thing to waste, this fellow that did the horrible act probable could of used some God's word on love. Perhaps if someone had took time to share their soul and try to get them to ask JESUS save this fellow, he would not of been doing the sad thing he was doing. Instead of thinking that BBQing an cat was what others wanted, He would of known that was not how God taught us to love one another. His soul is worth a lot more than that cat's, at least until he meets his judgement. Then it is too late.
Those are the colors on pages in their Bibles.
I don't understand how some will put more emphasis on animal life than human life by wanting to legalize drugs.
You don't know me. You make a lot of assumptions. I didn't insult you. I haven't said a word to you. But you find it necessary to attack me.
Why are you so angry?
I had one once, but the wheels fell off.
The big ole macho men who pound their chests and think torturing animals that HUMANS have taught and conditioned to trust us will never change. Their hearts of made of sh!t.
My cat is getting extra hugs and Pounce treats tonight.
HEY, Hubby's a redneck hick. Sure, he's had to put a few dogs down for running deer. One of them was his own...he HATED it. He got that look on his face when I called him over to read the article...the one that means "If I ever meet you, your teeth are INTESTINAL MATTER"...not all rednecks are bad. I know &#G> I are one too! And don't worry, I DO understand what you're trying to say.
Ducks (several varieties), Squirrels, cats (about 20 now), dogs (about 10, sure missing a good one now), rabbits, deer, raccoons, Parots, canarries, other various wild birds (most didn't live though), Hawk, Eagle (well part time help with my brothers group at college, Auburn), peacock, guinies, turtles, hamsters, snakes (non-poisonous), Ferrot, and some other weird ones I can't remember now.
"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." - John Adams
If the grilling and torture of a kitten is 'moral' then I suppose their point of view is valid...if not moral...then anyone can reach the obvious counclusion about thier opinions on this matter.
Later that morning, we were in another room and my FIL was on the phone. My dachsie couldn't see him, but she heard him, and at the sound of his voice she began to growl deeply and menacingly, slowly 'rolling' the growls in her throat as if she were savoring them. I've never heard her growl like that since.
Needless to say, the visit was cut short. But before we left, my FIL , who felt remorseful over frightening a Small Cute Dog who weighs less than 10lbs, tried to make friends with her. She jerked her head away when he tried to pet her, and she refused to show him any attention at all. She just gazed stonily off into space.
This was in 1996.
In 2001, my inlaws came to see us. When my little dachsie saw there were visitors, she ran out , tail up, ears flopping, excited and happy at the prospect of fresh worshippers to pay her homage.
Then the wind changed direction.
As soon as she realized it was the FIL coming towards her, she slammed on the brakes, barked and growled at him a few times, then turned around and stalked back into the house, where she hid under the bed.
I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it myself : A fat little dog holding a grudge for over 5 years.
Any man who would kill a poor defenseless dog for doing nothing more than following his heart, the love of the chase, is a cold, heartless, uncaring hick. He didn't have to kill the dogs, he could easily adopted them out or something. Your hubby is a cruel wicked person.
I agree. It seems the capability of evil in humans has no end.
