Gang-rape of teenager ordered as punishment for brother's sins

A teenage girl was gang-raped in central Pakistan last month as "punishment" meted out by a tribal jury for her brother's alleged affair with a woman of a higher tribe, police said.

A Panchayat, or tribal jury, ordered four men, including one of the jurists, to rape the 18-year-old girl on June 22 in the village of Meerwala.

Meerwala lies 610 kilometres south-west of the capital Islamabad.

District police chief Malik Saeed Awan said authorities were informed of the publicly-ordered gang-rape several days after the incident.

He said four men took turns to sexually assault the girl inside a room. She was then ordered to return home naked before 1,000 onlookers.

The rape was to avenge the "insult" caused to a family of the Mastoi tribe by the girl's brother's alleged "illicit affair" with a woman of a higher social standing.

The girl and her brother were from the lower Gujjar tribe.

The Panchayat had threatened that all women in the accused's family would be raped unless the 18-year-old submitted herself to the public gang rape.

Awan said police were taking action against members of the Panchayat.

Lawyers visiting the tribal area on Sunday urged the authorities to prosecute the rapists and the jury.

My point is that (both strands, Hebraic and Hellenic, of) our own culture have a history of treating captured enemy women in exactly the same way as the Muslim religion prescribes. Please note that I did point out that this is in the past, unlike (some interpretations of) the Muslim religion, which encourage such action today.

I'm also with you on that. I do, however, feel empathy towards those, both here and abroad, who might believe in Allah, yet don't feel hatred towards the United States, those who sincerely distance themselves mentally and spiritually with such blasphemous monsters. There really does appear to be SOME that feel strongly against this type of atrocity, as well as having good will towards us.

We are not at war with Islam, as President Bush has stressed. We are at war with terrorists. The culture didn't sentence that girl to be raped, a few corrupt, evil judges and townspeople did. If rape-as-punishment were the usual penalty within a culture, don't you think that we would be reading about incidents like this every day?

Now that the word is out, well, it does seem that we hear about teenage rape, or stonings, or lashings of women every day, in the muslim world. For crimes such as they uncovered their face, or were raped. Or, like this story, were related to a man who had sex with another woman

By the way, do you condemn those Muslims who raped that girl? Yes or no?

I'd like to read about this. Where can I find this in the Bible? When you speak of "Mosaic Law" did God command this?

The main difference is that our civilisation has "evolved" beyond that. Western civilisation is marked by the very fact that we adapt to changing conditions and adopt social change. No one in the West, except for a small religiously fanatical minority take religion seriously. Though we are quite tolerant of such Superstitious practices (with the exception of anti-religious liberals.)

The Muslim world on the other hand, never had a "reformation" and never secularized. They are still stuck in the 7th century having ossified intelectually and culturally.
