Gang-rape of teenager ordered as punishment for brother's sins

A teenage girl was gang-raped in central Pakistan last month as "punishment" meted out by a tribal jury for her brother's alleged affair with a woman of a higher tribe, police said.

A Panchayat, or tribal jury, ordered four men, including one of the jurists, to rape the 18-year-old girl on June 22 in the village of Meerwala.

Meerwala lies 610 kilometres south-west of the capital Islamabad.

District police chief Malik Saeed Awan said authorities were informed of the publicly-ordered gang-rape several days after the incident.

He said four men took turns to sexually assault the girl inside a room. She was then ordered to return home naked before 1,000 onlookers.

The rape was to avenge the "insult" caused to a family of the Mastoi tribe by the girl's brother's alleged "illicit affair" with a woman of a higher social standing.

The girl and her brother were from the lower Gujjar tribe.

The Panchayat had threatened that all women in the accused's family would be raped unless the 18-year-old submitted herself to the public gang rape.

Awan said police were taking action against members of the Panchayat.

Lawyers visiting the tribal area on Sunday urged the authorities to prosecute the rapists and the jury.

Every time I think the ole USA is getting a little bit on bad side I just need to read stuff like this.
I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free.
As that country singer sang.

These Islamists do it in the name of Mohammed or Allah.

Nobody has posted a single bit of proof that the court did this in the name of Allah or sharia. Or that these deep backwoods people are "Islamists" in the sense that the term is widely used today. These tribal juries are much more like lynch mobs than a court in the sense we use the term.

Anybody remember some of the things done by lynch mobs in this country only 75 years ago? Pretty much every single member of those mobs thought of himself as a good Christian. And quite a few of them justified their actions with a perversion of Christian doctrine.

I would say the creation of woman in my previous post clearly indicates what God had in mind when He created man and woman. As God gave us free will, He had no direct control over the people who would distort His intentions in His Name.

Yes, perhaps God may have made many of you physically bigger and stronger. But that didn't come with instructions to lord it over people. That choice is yours.

So we're supposed to admire a culture that has 1000 people watching a gang rape that was sanctioned by their courts?

So we're supposed to admire a culture whose conquistadors murdered and raped hundreds of thousands of native peoples, whose only sin was that they happened to live on top of some gold?

"She will probably then be stoned to death if a pregancy ensues from the gang rape.

How much more evil can these creatures become?"

What else would you expect from devil-worshippers? Satan loves cruelty, brutality, evil! That's what it's all about!

"It would be much more entertaining to see you try to defend the myriad lynchings, mass murders, rapes, destruction of property, theft, et al. committed in the name of Jesus and/or the Christian God by a few deluded followers. Ask the Incas, Mayans, and the families of those lynched in the American South what they think about the phrase "They will know we are Christian by our love.""

Let me see if I have this right. Some Christians have done things they should not. So, we can do things that we should not. Ummmmmm.....sounds like Klinton and other democrats may be Muslims.

With all due respect, we kind of outgrew that stuff about a thousand years ago.

So it's okay to be bigoted against certain cultures ---like the one of the conquistadors but not this one because it's in Pakistan?

Okay, but remember... there is much else written about it (specifically their roles in marriage) elsewhere in the Bible.

And like I said, I am lording anything over anyone. It's clearly not my fault.

People are free to reject any or all of what's written in a free society.

Correctamundo. AS HAVE SOME MUSLIMS. There are over a billion Muslims - if they all thought and hated in lockstep like you seem to believe that they do, do you honestly believe that Israel would still exist? That the US would still exist? That any form of government other than a theocracy would still exist in the world?

So, we can do things that we should not.

Your train of thought just had a derailment. Two wrongs most definitely do not make a right.

Take great care that you do not become that which you most hate and fear.

Our court system would never sentence the sister of a defendant to be gang-raped. Even if some KKK members were to conduct such a sickening deed in private, there would not be 1,000 people in the streets cheering it on, as there were in this Pakistani case.

Bullseye.

that bigoted threads based solely on hatred of another culture

So you hate the culture of the conquistadors ---does that make you a bigot hating another culture too? (Remember---the conquistadors came out of a Spain that had just had 700 years of Islamic influence and the Inquisistion lasted a few years and Spain reverted into a more typically Christian country)

Nope. It's obviously a sick culture. It's just that nobody has posted any evidence that this was done for specifically Islamic reasons. Many of these tribal peoples are only superficial converts to Islam, just as many African and Haitian people are only superficial converts to Christianity.

There were still wholesale lynchings of blacks going on in the American South as late as the 1960s, right here in America. And the ones usually holding the rope were good, white, church-goin' folk. Just growing pains, eh?

Anytime you have a billion people, from wildly diverse cultural backgrounds, you are going to have a significant number of nutballs and perverts among them.

You, sir, win the Christmas turkey for that nugget of truth. Thank you.

And 1000 of them just happened to gather to watch a raped 18 year old, full of shame, walk back home.

Sounds like a random ocurrance of nutballs to me. Yup. Move along.

All cultures are ths same...yeah, right. Do you support this punishment? Yes or no?

Muslims, in fact, are sticking together in this thing. Not all Muslims are in active war, but they do support Muslim fighters. Do other Muslims denounce terrorists? Do other Muslims support the US in this war? Remember the Muslim FBI Agent who said that he could not act against other Muslims?

You are right. Two wrongs don't make a right, yet that is the argument that was being implied. Christians have done bad things. And those conditions were corrected. Can you say the same thing about Islamics when they do bad things? Do other Islamics speak against, and even fight, other Islamics? Christians did.

The problem with your argument is that Christianity has progressed into the modern world, and has left the idea of conquest, crusade and inquisition behind. These are facts of history that reflect old cultural realities. Christianity has carried its improving message into modern times and has improved modern times. Islam however, is unchanging does not change the culture from which it arises, does not seek to change since it is revealed and perfect and has no concept of equality for all as does Christianity. It does not view itself as subject to improvement or learning from others cultures and does not seek rapproachment. Now it does proscribe cruelty and class distinctions and other defects of culture, I suppose, but it does not view all people as equal. Which of course leads to inequities of justice and the normal human impulse to dispense justice becomes in Islam an excuse for persecution, of women, of unbelievers.

regards
