California: Heating up: Evidence of global warming raises state, national concern

Doug Osugi can't say exactly when he began believing in global warming. The realization that Earth's temperature truly is rising dawned gradually.

"It is not something that suddenly, the next day, you realize that it's true," said Osugi, a California water resources planner. "I think it's something that you're slowly being convinced that, yes, it's there, as more and more information comes out.

but I don't think many people here are qualified to comment on climate models and changes

That's the beauty of having a basic understanding of the scientific method. It makes it easy to spot BS passed off as science. If the method is basically flawed, it is extremely likely the results are as well. The ideology of the right comes in step 2 when the usual suspects are identified as the ones screaming the loudest about the dangers. It's pretty simple really.

Besides, the party promulgating a new theory has the onus on them to convince skeptics. Scare tactics, bogus studies, and use of social scientists in padding their ranks to create the image of a consensus don't count.

So, the CO2 concentration has gone up from 0.028% to 0.037% of the total atmosphere. How absolutely significant. I noticed that on the little graph, it really looked like a steep rise... but, then, as an experienced scientist myself, it is hard to ignore the fact that no matter how small the change, it can be made to look huge by properly defining the x and y axes.

I believe that at co2science.org (or .com, I forget which), they provide a list of references to articles stating that the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere historically tends to follow (not precede or cause) rises in temperature. I guess that actual scientific observation can't be allowed to cloud the issue, though.

Absolutely!

Oddly, most of those who would drive us into the stone age to prevent global warming are also against logging. Yet, if we want to remove a lot of CO2 quickly, shouldn't we embark on a massive logging campaign? Starting with the "old-growth" forests, since they are net producers of CO2?

The enviralists prefer to burn trees than to grow them

It also puts dioxin into the air... thus illustrating another hypocracy of the envirowackos. I guess dioxin is only a problem if it comes from human sources...

Even if we stopped emissions completely today, if the models are correct, there will STILL be man-induced warming

I'll bet we could stop it if we got all the envirowackos to hold their breaths.

It's the VLWC at work. Daschle's bringing Kyoto back to the floor in the Senate, just in time to divide the nation, anger the international coalition, further hurt the economy and, the real reason for this article, to damage the President and Republicans for Nov. elections.

We're at war and the Senators haven't finished their Constitutionally mandated work on the nation's budget, nor have they done much to help the us or the administration defend our nation and fight terrorism, make us less dependent on terrorist nations for our energy needs, or fill empty judicial positions...but they have had time to redefine the American family, work to remove God from our homes and schools, and allocate $$$ for the Smithsonian's alcohol storage crisis.

What's the press's responsibility in a free nation?

Global warming is not what is concerning me in California. I am livid about the State senate passing this tax us to death budget however, so perhaps the real warming around here is our rising tempers at the jerks we have in government!

Global warming is more an ideological issue to the right than a scientific one, and if we're wrong, we will be very, very, sorry.

Even if we are wrong, it will not matter. There is nothing we can do, even according to the Kyoto models which say if we reduce CO2 emissions by 30%, we will only be able to reduce the impact by 0.03 degrees!

John L. Daly
Profile of a Greenhouse `skeptic'

Originally from Britain, I came to live in Tasmania in 1980, settling near Launceston, and for the last 9 years have been one of the numerous `skeptics' speaking out publicly against the Global Warming scare, which makes exaggerated claims that the earth will warm by +1.5 to +6 deg. C. due to an enhanced Greenhouse Effect.

Climate and climate change has been a lifelong study of mine since my early days as a ship's officer in the British Merchant Navy.  I have lived through and traced the progress of the `ice age' scare of the 1970's, the `nuclear winter' scare of the 1980s, and now the `global warming' scare of the present.  All these scares have advanced the interests of what was a small academic discipline 30 years ago to become a mammoth global industry today. It is my view that this industry has, through the `politics of fear' which it has promoted, acted against the interests of the public.

I am the author of "The Greenhouse Trap", (Bantam Books, 1989), and also of articles and papers in New Zealand Science Monthly, New Woman, Forest Industries Journal , Norwegian Oil Review, papers in "Climate Change" (Univ. of Western Sydney) and for the 1990 ANZAAS Congress. Written and verbal submissions to the Industry Commission and the 1996 National Greenhouse Response Strategy Review

Numerous invited talks to community groups in Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales and the A.C.T. on climate change issues.

Participated in several talkback radio and TV interviews and was interviewed for Australian newspaper articles and features on the Greenhouse Effect. Provided research assistance to the UK Channel 4 TV `Equinox' production "The Greenhouse Conspiracy" in 1991 and was also extensively interviewed in, and contributed research to, Australia Channel 9's `cover story' on Greenhouse in their `Sunday' program in April 1993. Also contributed to a TV documentary on Greenhouse by the Finnish Broadcasting Company.

Eureka could use some global warming...it got up to 69 degrees today. The record for today is around 72 or 74. Right now it is 62. I read in another article that there may be more snow if the weather warms more so who ya gonna believe.

The weather has been very mild where I live. So what's the problem?

Yeah, I haven't even used my AC yet. Very pleasant evenings so far. Almost.... too pleasant.

Must be global warming again.

Let's see, add three trillion cubic yards cement, cut down appropriate greenage for parking lots, add 200K people and accessories, it is not inconcievable the temp raised three degrees.

Don't forget to add several hundred thousand heat pumps removing heat from inside insulated, sealed buildings and placing it in the atmosphere outside!
