Dick Gephardt's appalled. Tom Daschle's chagrined. Congress, in general, is at wit's end.

It's time for us to do something, they say. WorldCom. Enron. Global Crossing. Enough.

Here's what I say: not so fast. Before you start policing other peoples' books, police your own.

You know, all these corporate failures would make an investigation look very attractive right now...

We just need to keep a move on McAuliffe quiet until it is too late for him to know. STEALTH is the key, IMHO.

He was furious with Repubs for not spending enough on prescription drug benefits for the elderly. I was hoping he was going to have a stroke. I really can't stand him.

Good find Mud. You pretty accurately summed up Everett Dirksons famous statement about a million here and a million there.....In his day a million was "real money."

Great article by Dr. Williams!

But the mystery to me is why Americans are so upset over an isolated case of a private company using devious accounting gimmicks and demanding that Congress do something, while we accept without question the accounting fraud and deception that has become an inherent feature of government. I'd like to think that it's ignorance rather than a preference for government dishonesty.

Amen, Dr. Williams. We need to make a long, loud, continuous stink about government accounting policies.

Thanks for posting this, Mark.

Acknowledging the truth that poor management and corruption start at the top in any business, it then makes sense that it is so with government. This government is out of control and has been for years. The misplacing of our money by the billions is unfathomable and defies comprehension.

If our Legislators are so fiscally lax and corrupt it seems a logical step to MAKE THEM CLEAN UP THIER INCOMPETENCE AND OUTRIGHT THEFT of our taxpayer's money NOW Before dealing out justice to companies simply following their lead, who assume immunity from accountability precisely because the country's leaders are so totally corrupt.

Thank God we have an honest and moral President, at last. Now, let's see what he can accomplish in the next 3 years toward cleaning this mess up. It won't be easy. Those who are corrupt and those who benefit from their corruption will use any and every means at their disposal to protect the corruptioon they created.

If I'm not mistaken, credit should go to Foghorn Leghorn - AKA Fritz Hollings (D)

Neil Cavuto's commentary should be e-mail and faxed to the entire Congress. I am so sick of the way they run our country.

Good post.

I say we get rid of the IRS and the income tax which is the BIGGEST fraud ever on the American people.

It will take a revolution of biblical proportions to cut the bastards off at the knees, but when it's done WE will be the ones calling the shots and NOT them.

Everett Dirkson, (R-Ill) was senate minority leader.

Researchers have been unable to find a written version of Dirksen's most famous quotation. Cautioning against treating the federal budget casually, Dirksen observed that the unit of money favored by those seeking to fund programs is a million — later versions had it a billion — dollars. "A billion here and a billion there, and pretty soon you're talking real money.
