If society cannot end racial discrimination, at least it can arm minorities with the education to defend themselves from some of discrimination’s effects.

Thomas is certainly correct, but I would hope that his opinion is based on something more Constitutional than this.

I hope Clarence Thomas has a long healthy life and serves on the Court for the duration or until he is term limited out by a Constitutional Amendment. He is a brilliant honest man. And he will deservedly go down in history as one of the best Justices to ever sit on the bench. Freedom loving Americans are going to owe this man their admiration, their respect and their gratitude for his role in preserving freedom.

Without having read his full opinion, I would essentially agree,
although I'm yet a little uneasy over the emphasis on minorities and his nibbling around the edges of the "poverty causes crime" bit.

Money talks and BS walks.

The Liberal cognoscenti are in a real conundrum here. Do they:

a) Placate their school union members by continuing to support higher salaries for teachers and more money for schools?
Or
b) Do they continue to support the (misguided) loyalty of their Black constituents, by actually trying to improve the overall education of Blacks?

Ahhhh, but here is the rub:

Educated Blacks, will have more of a tendency to drift away from the Democratic Party, therefore, why educate them? Which brings me back to the beginning: "Money talks (the Unions) and BS walks (Blacks away from the democratic Party)"

Powerful sentence. Bigotry and prejudice are a part of the human condition. We seek "our own" in order to belong. The stronger members of society may give special favors to disadvantaged groups, but often these advantages are mere crumbs, designed to keep the disadvantaged in a permanant dependent state.

One needs only to look at the welfare program or the call for reparations. A promise of something for nothing only perpetuates ignorance and poverty.

The goal is not to make up for past mistakes by tipping the power balance in favor of minorities, but to provide an opportunity for equal footing in the world today.

Armed with an education, minorities can rise above the crumbs. This country is strong because we always believed anything was possible. Capitalism works because anyone can succeed. Armed with an education, minorities have as much of a chance to succeed as anyone.
