That's okay. I know that mid-westerners don't face earthquakes often, so I thought I'd mention a few ideas worth considering.
With Hurricains you pretty much know they are coming. You can provide a storm shelter if you live in a region with tornados. You can build to avoid floods, or at least escape before the flood reaches it's zenith. But earthquakes catch you where ever you are whenever this want. Bam, your on...
Don't just think you can't do anything about this, so forget it. I appreciate where you're coming from so I'll leave it at that
Take care.

I've read up on the New Madrid fault since I live in an earthquake zone. It's an interesting read. Thanks for the comments.

I remember the last time New Madrid really shook - it was obvious. This time the only thing that moved was the steel siding on the barn, it rattled for a few seconds & quit. I am within 1/2 mile of the airport & the train tracks, so at the time that was what I was thinking it was (until I saw this post).
Some local experts I know say New Madrid is way overdue for a big one.

I felt something in Decatur, IL. I thought it was a train or something at the airport at the time. I am about 20 miles west of Pittsburgh, PA, and I was on FR. If the earthquake made it this far it sounded like a low flying propeller plane in trouble. About 20 minutes later I heard the same sound.

A lot of things are overdue. The Yellowstone supervolcano, the next Ice Age, another monster asteroid, the Second Coming. Don't let the Internet Service Provider's bill become overdue and everything will be fine.

I wonder why animals would freak out before an earthquake? Maybe there is some high frequency noise that makes them go mental beforehand. Would be an interesting read, gonna have to check up on that. The geologist who "predicted" the Loma Prieta earthquake (coincident with the World Series game) was Jim Berkland. Jim includes missing animal reports among the indicators of pending seismic activity. The hours during and immediately after a "syzygy" (full moon/new moon) tend to have a higher incidence due to the "earth tide" enhanced by the colinear alignment of earth/sun/moon. The electric effects that are sometimes observed prior to the quake are believed to be piezo-electric in origin and generated by the intense pressures that build prior to a slip.

I dreamed (nightmare, actually) about floods last night and fallen bridges. Hmmm.

NO OFFENSE RECEIVED.
Am rushed . . . however . . .
I do think I can still count enough to note when a number of quakes increase out of the norm. I'm not saying what it means. I do BELIEVE it is different than similar clusters in the past. I don't know why.
I understand your perspective. It is a rational one. I don't happen to agree with it.

There was a pretty big New Madrid quake in the early to mid 70's. Our wooden louvered folding doors between rooms shook in Nashville. A friend who lives in Hopkinsville, KY said he remembers the brick wall of his house going all wavy on him. That's the only one I've every felt.

Okay for you:
All your earthquakes are belong to us!! LOL

Got me, maybe it's the "quality" of the equipment.

I'm in St. Louis and am embarrassed to say that I was out to lunch (literally) with a woman friend; we were yakking our heads off and wouldn't have noticed if the walls caved in. It passed us by entirely.

I just thought it was gas...

You feel anything over yonder?

A 4.4 doesn't even qualify as a sneeze in California!
To: Quix
Only that I'm very concerned about the Yucca Mtn. region. It just had a 4.4 13 miles from the site of the nuclear waste repository. I don't want that stuff here...its unsafe.

Try working to shut of the gas supply under a house in the aftermath of the Northridge quake when a 5.5 aftershock hits! Didn't know I could crawl backwards that fast!

I'm in a solid two story stone house!
Do you have a thatched roof, too? Do you live in a Thomas Kincaid painting?
