S.C. Governor Sends Troopers to Borders to Stop Government Shipments of Plutonium

Gov. Jim Hodges ordered state troopers and other authorities to South Carolina's borders Friday to stop government shipments of plutonium that could begin arriving from Colorado as early as this weekend.

But Hodges has said he fears the government will end up leaving the plutonium permanently in South Carolina, making the state a tempting target for terrorists.

Hodges, a Democrat who is up for re-election in the fall, has been threatening for weeks to use state troopers to block roads into the Savananna River Site and has vowed to lie down in the road if necessary to stop the plutonium-carrying trucks.

A couple of years ago Gov. Nelson sent the National Guard out to stop some nuke waste from comeing through Nebraska, i dont remember what happend with that though.

IMO, it's pointless and rather silly.

What we need to do is nullify that foolish law from Jimmy Carter's era that outlaws reprocessing of nuclear waste, recycle it like the French- and others- have done for decades, and be done with the whole "storage issue" once & for all.

If that it what the people of SC want him to do and it wont get him booted out of office then that is his perogative.

The governor is a certified moron who is happy to put his election ahead of the country's best interests. He fits right in there with Norm Mineta who is endangering all Americans with his insane PC policy on airport security.

Maybe the NAACP boycotting the state highway rest stops will misinterpret the Troopers' intentions and start a conflict with them. The troopers would then presume the NAACP was after the plutonium and arrest them for terrorist activity.

Looks to me like simple political posturing. Plutonium has been shipped to Savannah River for decades, I think. What's new besides the Gov being up for re-election?

Very interesting! He's a dem - which means he should WELCOME anything the feds offer. Yet, the current atmosphere is such that it's "cool" to stand up agin the "fedral gubment." Naaaaaaah! He'd NEVER use it as a campaign issue! /off sarcasm

I could go on for a WHILE about how he won the last election. He's desparate to keep the office - and it shows. Carolinians love nothing MORE than someone who stands up to the feds! Sheesh! What a circus!

Not "nullification" in this case. Rather, it's more like "interposition".

Last time this was going on you had Martin Luther King denouncing the concept and stating, more or less ".... with nullification and interposition dripping from their lips".

At the time he was talking about Democrats in the South, as we are here. Guess some things just never change.

You can be sure they'll send it to an area that's economically depressed with a high rate of unemployment. That's what they did in Carlsbad, New Mexico. The people were so desperate for jobs that the DOE's "Madison Avenue" public relations people were able to convince them it would be a good thing for their community.
