I am afraid it will take a truly massive and horrific loss to galvanize us to that reality (I would have thought the WTC would have done it ... but I guess not).

For the record, when my description -- complexion, build, dress, language, behavior, etc. -- matches that of a mass murderer (or, of mass murderers in general), I pledge to be neither surprised nor angry when I am brought in for questioning by the authorities, especially (but not only) when I am a visitor in a foreign land (i.e. not my own). Furthermore, I will denounce anyone in that foreign land who takes it upon him- or herself to voice outrage allegedly on my behalf.
