I believe the announcement was made today because they were transferring him to DOD custody. That is the big news about this.
I also want to point out to all the people who have been profiling proponents that this is a perfect example of why profiling is not a solution.
That's a very good possibility. However, they did transfer that person (I cannot remember his name) whose parents were Saudi, but was born in Louisiana and held US citizenship (although there is a question about that) into US federal custody from Gitmo recently. It may be that Padillo had renounced his US citizenship and became either a Pakistani or an Afghani.

Not to my knowledge, Ridge had little to do with this. However, lets not jump to high here. There is no indication that the RDD ever excisted. Though plotting against the US Government using an RDD is good enough for me. Talk about High Treason.......
There will be a legal challenge to this, unfortunately. But according to Ashcroft, there is SCOTUS precedent for trying U.S. Citizens who have turned traitor before a military commission. Abu Zubaydah must be singing like a canary. I wonder who is doing the interrogation? Maybe we flew in some of the "experts" from the Big Lubyanka in Moscow to handle Zubaydah.

Well, I expect one of the reasons we're hearing about it after the fact is that they were trying to do that very thing... track down his fellow conspirators.... wouldntchathink ? Didn't hear anyone saying anything about not worrying but catching one is at least a start. I don't think this is the end of this story nor do I think itis the only one that will surface. I'm grateful the administration doesn't feel it necessary to run before a camera and tell everything they know to Osama and the immediate world but I would like to know if they have confiscated his "supplies".
There was a report shortly after 9/11 about a Hispanic (Puerto Rican, if I remember correctly) from New Jersey (Jersey City?) who converted to Islam and went to Afghanistan to fight with al Qaeda.
Some of the defendants in the terrorist trials in NYC have been black and Hispanic converts to Islam.
If that flight that crashed over Rockaway was brought down by a shoe bomb, the bomber on that flight to the Dominican Republic was very likely Hispanic.
