Denny's black staff allegedly discriminated
The Charleston Post and Courier ^ | June 9, 2002 | AP

ANDERSON S.C. - An Upstate man has sued Denny's for discrimination, saying black workers laced his eggs with bug spray because he wore clothing with Confederate emblems.

Eric Stephens said for five months, black employees at one of the restaurant company's Anderson locations made him and his friends wait for more than an hour for a table, served them burnt food and contaminated their eggs with bug spray, according to the lawsuit.

A spokeswoman for Denny's described the lawsuit as "outlandish and "frivolous."

Let me see if I understand this correctly. This man and his friends endured lousy service and bad food for five months or did it happen only once and he decided to do something about it five months later. If it is the former, than this guy is a real moron. If it is the latter, than he probably doesn't have much of a case.

In my early years, I worked at restaurants and I can tell you for a fact that these sort of things are more commonplace than you might imagine. Unwanted customers were given lousy service in the hopes that they would get up and leave (or never come back again). Rude or abusive customers would often have their food tainted. And I'm not talking about Burger King here. I'm talking about a moderately priced sit-down restaurant that had a decent reputation. All a waitress had to do was tell the cooks that this customer gave her a hard time and the food would get spit on, or worse.

If you are the type who hassles waitstaff or act demeaning towards them or if you act haughty and arrogant in any way, beware. Since my days of working in restaurants, I have never once been rude to a waiter or waitress. If the service was lousy and I leave a small (or no tip at all) tip, I ensure that I never go back to that restaurant. Waitstaff have long memories of short tippers!

But, what kind of an idiot keeps going back for five months of abusively bad service?

I dunno, but I can tell you this, the American sheeple re-elected a president after 4 solid years of abusively bad service.

That pretty much sums it up.

Denny's sucks, and I refuse to go there anymore. The service is lousy, the food is lousy, and as far as I'm concerned, there are enough Cracker Barrels and Waffle Houses out on the road to eliminate the need to ever stop at Denny's

I couldn't agree more. I've been to several Denny's from the East Coast to the West Coast, and at their very best they are mediocre. It doesn't matter what state you're in or the ethnicity of the staff; the service is always slow, the food poorly prepared, and the the order is usually wrong (but since you waited for two hours you don't risk sending it back and having it wait another two hours). If I'm in situation where there's nowhere to eat at but a Denny's, I'll choose a gas station. The quality of the food is about the same and you don't have to wait.

Hey, right after the Cincinnati riot I went into an ARBY's and all the black staff were giving me the eagle eye and whispering and I just walked out of there pronto. I walked out of there starving, but I would not give them a chance to sell me food that had been spit on or worse! I will never go to a restaurant where blacks have access to food as they might do a Jesse Jackson and spit in it or worse, put dope or cleaning solvents in it.

Which lab determined that there was bug spray on the eggs ...?

"Don't need no lab. The eggs have a dead bug on 'em."

I'll tell ya'll a little secret. There's a Denny's located on Briley Parkway here in Nashville that serves the best damned breakfast you ever ate. Service is a little slow. But well worth the wait.

I don't doubt you, but if I'm in Nashville, I'm going to take advantage of one of the many fine barbecue establishments in that city.

They weren't commonplace where I worked because if I saw someone doing such a thing they would get their butt turned in to the management or ownership. Anybody with any decency who witnesses it should put a stop to it.

I worked in a restaurant briefly back in High School- although we didn't engage in taintintg food on purpose, the experience made me less than enthusiastic about the folks who are toiling away in the kitchen. Many of them are too stupid to do anything else, or their criminal records keep them out of other occupations. There was a great book by a New York chef (I think he works at Tavern on the Green) about 10 years ago, detailing what REALLY happens in the kitchen- if you read it, you would probably do most of your cooking at home.

By the way, we had a couple of these morons here in Anchorage "taint" the taco filling at their place of employment by (how shall I put this delicately?) taking a dump in it. This was caught on the surveillance camera tape, and they were jailed- not much publicity about it, though...

As for salad bars, don't get me started.

Hey, have a nice lunch!

Ditto that!

Restaurant people have a culture of their own. Lots of drugs and debauchery, lots of people living their lives on the ragged edge of disaster. In high school I washed dishes at an upscale Italian place, and in college I waited tables at a middle-of-the-road kind of a place. In both cases, I was keenly aware of working around people who tended to be self-destructive.

Restaurants with open kitchens tend to be better. Something about the customers being able to see the cooks keeps things clean and prevents unsanitary food from leaving the kitchen. If something gets dropped on the floor in an open kitchen it ussually gets thrown away. In a normal kitchen it ussually gets put back on the plate and served anyway.

The first thing I do when I go to any new restaurant is use the bathroom. If the bathroom is clean, chances are the kitchen is too and vice versa.

Rude customers and lousy tippers always got the short end of service at the places where I waited tables.........lousy tippers were never forgotten.

Black customers in general, are lousy tippers.
