Elizabeth looks like a boy with long hair. Perhaps that was the attraction for the creep who abducted and murdered her.

That's what I wanted to start with, just the "foundation". I've been wanting them to learn something like this for ages, and the news from this week is what finally prompted my procrastinating fingers to dial the number. It's a start.

I've gone over this with my kids a million times since they were toddlers. "Don't talk to anyone". "If someone grabs you, what ever you do, don't get in that car....scream, bite, scratch, kick, hit, scratch their eyes out, pull their hair, kick their reproductive organs, hit them in the nose with the palm of your hand, scream "fire", etc.....but don't get in the car". Now I want them to learn how to literally defend themselves, if needed. Any suggestions?

Their ages, and general physical condition/size? Athletic, or sports inclined? Male? Female? Give me a bit of an idea, and I'll try to point you toward something in your area.

For someone who hasn't been keeping up with this much (me) is there any thought at all that this could be in any way related to the abduction of JonBenet Ramsey a few years ago? Utah is not so far from Colorado, it's an up-scale neighborhood again, from what I hear, and a pretty blonde child again.

Murdered her? Do you know something we don't know -- or haven't heard yet?

Now where did this girl disappear from? anywhere around these places?

It's unlikely, though not impossible, that a Roman Catholic priest is involved in this case. Their depredations are almost always on victims of their own faith, over whom they can more likely exert religious as well as social pressure to remail silent and keep their dirty secret.

The Smart family, and the neighborhood in which they reside, is devoutly Mormon, and the neighbors have been heavily involved with the search and with support of the distraught family, according to accounts in the SLC newspapers. Still, it may be worth considering if you are at least on the right track.

This is not un-Christian. Christ Himself said that for anyone that harms one of the little ones, it would be better if a millstone were tied around his neck and he was thrown into the sea.

You're so right! How have we forgotten this? There should be no sympathy or understanding for anyone who commits a crime against a child. And they should never, ever be released after even one offense. There should be no forgiveness for this type of crime.

Even though it is off topic, here are my thoughts.... That guy hasn't been a priest for a long time and seems to have been quickly de-frocked by the RC church. In light of their current scandal, this looks unusual. What did I read - they had him evaluated and then quickly said good bye to him, wasn't it?
That guy was/is a truly sick individual and beyond the norm of current scandalous priestly accusations.
Anyway for my money the guy in the article is a whole new ballgame from the ones in the media now.

Sorry, just jumping to (logical) conclusions.

You make a very good point about doing the unexpected when faced with danger. I attended a self-defense lecture once where options were discussed other than physically fighting back. If you see that you will quickly be chased down and subdued, there are other things you can do. An abductor does NOT want to call attention to himself, and he DOES want to maintain control. If you see that you are about to be forced into a car, "fainting," faking a seizure, or (heaven forbid) soiling yourself can all be used to disrupt an abductors plans, making escape more feasible. An abductor's window of opportunity is often very small......any delay might make him abandon his plans.

I have a friend who used this "surprise" technique, although she hadn't planned it. She was leaving a Charismatic Christian prayer meeting in a neighborhood where carjackings had taken place. The scripture being discussed was one about being hidden and protected under His pinions, eagle's wings, etc. A hoodlum jumped in the passenger side of her car just as she was putting the keys into the ignition. Startled and scared, she threw her hands in the air and screeched: FEATHERS! FEATHERS! The guy took off like a bat out of hell. Others leaving the meeting ran him down and apprehended him.

True story.

My dog wouldn't let anyone touch a member of our family. He would attack immediately. He is just a springer spaniel and looks very friendly, but he is actually overly protective.

**Elizabeth looks like a boy with long hair.**

I disagree. I think she looks like a wholesome and freshly scrubbed, athletic, young girl. Perhaps we're so used to 14 year olds with tons of makeup attempting to copy Brittany Spears.

Nonsense, Ms. Todd. These people care about this little gir. We feel helpless but involved and pray fervently for her safety. I am sorry you can't discern this.
