Freeper Author Jeff Head and his series "Dragon's Fury" written up in Shotgun News
Shotgun News ^ | June 2002 | Fred

Dragon's Fury - Breath of Fire by FReeper Jeff Head has been written up in the June 17, 2002 edition of Shotgun News.

The article is on Page 73 of the Magazine and is by the owner of Fred's M-14 Stocks. He entitles it, "Breath of Fire" a Scary Book.

Here is the body of the article.

BREATH OF FIRE A SCARY BOOK
I just read a white hot new book on the start of World War III, called "Dragon's Fury - Breath of Fire" by Jeff Head.

The first of five volumes, it is well worth the read because it shows how easy it would be in the world today for us to go - in a few months - from superpower to embattled ...under a threat even more massive than World War II.

Naturally, our Chinese friends are at the bottom of it, just like they will be in real life. (Before the outbreak of World War II with Japan, farsighted authors were portraying a war with Japan in prophetic fiction, one forecasting the Japanese advance on the Philipines - and the attack on Pearl Harbor! I sure hope Jeff doesn't have the same foresight, for, if he does, we are in for some rough sledding.) ...

The huge Chinese trade surplus today is financing a Chinese military build-up. The Japs were smart, tough enemies, and the Chinese are going to be tough, hard-to-beat enemies also. Truly, "those who do not remember history are condemmed to repeat it." ...

Available from Barnes and Nobles, Amazon.com or www.dragonsfury-breathoffire.com.

Get a copy. It'll scare you!

I'm about 90% finished my book.

I've been reading about shoestring book marketing, and scratching and clawing for reviews is considered critical. Each review goes along with the letters and free books asking for more reviews, sort of a positive feedback loop bootstrap operation. This is considered an absolutely invaluable use of your free giveaway books, it's got to be done.

I think this might help. I arranged for Jim Quinn of The War Room talk radio show to get "The Ballad of Mike Moran" CD. His show is on 96.9 FM Pittsburgh, and on the web at www.warroom.com, LIVE and archived.

Quinn played and promoted the heck out of "The Ballad" from the beginning and real big for St. Patrick's Day as well. Also, this past Wednesday he had Vetnet on his show for a nice long interview and another playing of "The Ballad." Now The War Room has ordering info for "The Ballad of Mike Moran" CD and poster right on the front page. They are also working with Vetnet to secure corporate sponsorship of the upcoming "Ballad" video.

Here's a link to The War Room Show Archives page. Vetnet's interview is in the Wed. June 5th show, at the 86 minute mark. I think Quinn would be worth sending a copy of your book to. I'm sure he'll like it and say nice things about it. Vetnet and doug from upland can tell you it would be worth your while.

FReepmail me and I'll get you his mailing address if you are interested.

I figured as much. I have sent twenty-thirty out just like you mentioned. Have gotten a few reviews back and hope the momentum continues to build.

In the mean time ... I'm still writing.

Good job on the books, Jeff. I just got myself a copy of volume 1 from amazon.com and am just starting it.
I like what I've read so far.

Glad to see that it is getting attention in shotgun news. That should boost sales for you.

Hiya, Jeff! I bought the second-to-last copy Amazon had, and it came in four days, I read it immediately, and can't wait for the second volume--! I wrote a review, but for some reason, it didn't post on Amazon... Congratulations on your success!

Thanks ... hope you really enjoyed it and am sure you will even like Vol. II better.

Please consider writing that review on FR too, and maybe on the site at Barnes and Nobles. Amazon can take a week or longer to post the reviews.

FRegards.

They order in five or ten at a time. It's done through a process called "Print on Demand" which allows them to order however many they think they will sell in a specific time period.

I'm still hoping a big publisher picks it up sometime and puts ten or twelve of them in every Walden's and B. Dalton in the country. Either way ... I'm going to keep on writing.

This is one of the advantages of self publishing. If you did swing a standard NY publishing contract, you would have no marketing besides what you are already doing on your own, and if the book did not sell from the shelves in 90 days it would be "remaindered", sent back, you'd eat it, and have the mark of doom put on you.

IOW, a NY publishing contract with its tiny advance and 10% royalties is a crap shoot where 90% lose totally. In self publishing, you give yourself time to build a head of steam one review at a time.
