Texas History Gets New Mexican Twist

"Remember the Alamo" is a battle cry that Texans learn early in their formative years.

But the call to remember the Texas revolution of 168 years ago has a new place in Texas history, somewhere in the back of the textbooks.

More or less by definition, there is no such thing as a "lawful revolt."

Sure there is. It all depends on which "laws" and "lawmakers" one is revolting against. If the laws are contrary to the higher laws, ie. the Constitution, be it of the US or the then existing Mexican one, then revolting against those "laws" and "lawmakers" would indeed be a "lawful revolt".

More or less by definition, there is no such thing as a "lawful revolt." Revolts are against the laws and/or those who make them. Justified revolt, certainly.

Exactly right! Many Texicans had no objection to living under Mexican rule, it was the behavior of the dictator Santa Anna that prompted their revolt.

Yes, Mexico won the Alamo. Santa Anna laid siege to the Alamo and the Mexicans killed all who were there down to the very last man. Among them--Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie. The phrase, "Remember the Alamo" was American rhetoric and part of a campaign of disinformation after the Alamo was lost to the Mexicans. But why was there a slaughter to begin with? Spain wanted to populate and colonize the northern territory (before Mexican independence) so Austin was granted permission to colonize the Texas territory, but there were terms to his agreement with Spain. The settlers had to be of good moral character, Catholic, abide by Mexican law and eventually become Mexican citizens. When word was out of the new settlement thousands came–out number the native Mexicans–things got out of hand. U.S. selfishly wanted Texas territory for itself, and James selfishly wanted Texas for himself. Long declared Texas independent and naming him self president of Texas. Mexico now had a problem, and U.S. still had selfish interests. Mexico passed an immigration law that forbid future immigration into Texas by U.S. citizens. They came anyway. Another president was chosen for Texas, Santa Anna moved north reaching the outskirts of San Antonio, and the old Franciscan mission–the Alamo. And the story continues . . . . "We are all in this together and we include those Hispanic kids who are now in our district who have a heritage from Mexico," Miller said.

But "purists" are up in arms over the new curriculum, and say the school district is re-writing history.

"There is only one way to teach Texas history and that's Texas history," said Dan Stein, executive director of the Federation for American Immigration Reform. "Now, if you're going to teach Mex history or you're going to teach some other country's history, that's fine. But Texas history is Texas history."
