Fortuyn Party Soars in Polls

Pim Fortuyn

Fortuyn's party has attracted new voters since his death

Support for the party of anti-immigration politician Pim Fortuyn has been increasing since his murder a week ago, a Dutch opinion poll has suggested.

25 Labour

25 Liberals

15 Greens

Nipo poll

With only two days left before Wednesday's general election, Pim Fortuyn's List has overtaken Labour to take second place with 18.5% of the votes, according to the survey by the Nipo research bureau.

A poll by another organisation, Nova, on 3 May put him on 12.4% support, while a Nipo survey on 1 May gave him 17%.

The new poll - the first since Mr Fortuyn's death - puts him only two percentage points behind the leaders, the right-wing Christian Democrats, whose support registers at 20.5%.

Wim Kok

Wim Kok's Labour party has been beaten into third

Support for Mr Fortuyn's party was registered at 18.5%, which would give it 28 of the country's 150 seats.

The Labour Party of outgoing Prime Minister Wim Kok has slid to 16.5%, the poll suggests - dramatically lower than the 29% it achieved in the 1998 election.

If the poll is accurate, it would mean Labour losing nearly half its 45 seats.

All election campaigning was stopped after Mr Fortuyn's murder, but BBC correspondents said it had been thought that his party could benefit from a sympathy vote.

Dutch political commentators told BBC News Online that Mr Fortuyn's party was very likely to be in the new Dutch cabinet, if the poll predictions were accurate.

His party could get as many as four or five seats in the 12-member cabinet, said Kees Lunshof of De Telegraaf newspaper.

Mourner at Pim Fortuyn funeral

The Netherlands was shocked at Pim Fortuyn's murder

"The sympathy vote will generate extra support," he told BBC News Online.

"The problem is that no-one knows if they are able to offer suitable people for the job - it's such a new party."

And Frank Poortuyes, of De Volkskrant newspaper, said the left was "taking a hammering" partly because some voters held it responsible for demonising Mr Fortuyn, thereby playing a role in his murder.

The margin of error of the opinion poll is 1.8% for the big parties.

More than 2,100 people were interviewed, fewer than the usual sample of 3,000, as polling was also suspended temporarily after Mr Fortuyn's death.

There could be "sympathy vote." There could also be people who have learned his views via the assassination, and agree with them, views suppressed, obscured and demonized by the local P.C. Police.

That would be my guess.

I wonder where the Christian Democrat Party, which the article calls "right-wing", stands on immigration. Anybody know?

Something is happening in Europe. There is a swing away from the "Third Way" leftism of the '90's toward conservatism, but there is somthing else also. There seems to be a wave of populism, a rejection of the tweedledee-tweedledum politics that has prevailed in many European countries. This bears watching.

Yes, it looks as if Dutch people want to clamp down on the number of Islamic immigrants entering their country.

I would personally like to see a complete ban on immigration by Islamics.

Asians, Russians, Italians, Irish, English, Africans -- all have contributed mightily to this country with their industriousness and brilliance. What have the Islamics brought? Name one great Islamic industrialist or inventor. One.

I can name one: Sheikh bin Laden, Osama bin Laden's father.

Some have broached the subject on this thread, the matter of Moslem immigrants in Fortuyn's homeland.  I look at it like this.

It occurs to me that there is little difference between unbriddled immigration and full-on invasion.  Both result in the occupation of foreign territory.  One doesn't involve force or guns.  And because it doesn't, it is mistakenly viewed as benign.  It is anything but benign in my opinion.

When tens of millions of illegal aliens enter the United States, they occupy vast regions of US territory.  Due to the tendency of like people to congregated with like people, these regions wind up totally under the controll of the invading hoards.  This is every bit as much an insurgency as an invading army.  Sooner or later the occupying force will constitute the majority status.  Their will, will be domonstrated and old populations will be subjegated.  Cultures and values systems will be replaced.

This is happening with rapidity in Europe and the United States.  The blinding speed with which this is occurring is simply amazing.

What is taking place is not just an invasion.  It is the managed subjegation of sovereign peoples and their homelands.  It is being facilitated by the elected leaders of the free world.  It endangers the self-determinative aspects of the host nations.  As native populations deminish as the rightful airs heirs to decisions that affect their own nations, outside forces userp that right in the interest of foreign values, cultures and sovereignties.

We are seeing the systematic decapitation of self-rule in western nations.  Note that when whites ruled South Africa it was deemed a bad thing.  Try as hard as I might, I have seen no such correlation attached to foreign nationals who have occupied western modernized nation states.  Third worlders rule in this new internationalist environment.

When it comes to western nations these days, you snooze, you lose.

I see nothing but snoozing going on.

So much for the waning hope of the leftist media elite that dutch voters would drift away from LPF as the election drew nearer.

And Frank Poortuyes, of De Volkskrant newspaper, said the left was "taking a hammering" partly because some voters held it responsible for demonising Mr Fortuyn, thereby playing a role in his murder.

The best news I've heard all day.

Howdy

I believe this is authentic. The message has been sent, any advocacy for a rational discussion on immigration that is reflective of a responsible formulation of public policy that benefits the population of a first world country over the interests of third world immigrants will get you a head shot.

I believe this single act has changed a lot of minds, while an immigration policy friendly to third world aspiring immigrants is compassionate, the virulent anti western leftist agenda cynically abuses that lattitude to advance the cause of thirld world tyrrany and intolerance.

Millions of voters got the message, compassion for reptiles is a recipe for disaster, both overseas and here on our southern border.

Using the term "sympathy vote" is the Left's attempt to minimize in advance the importance of the vote. "People don't really agree with those wackos, they're just expressing sympathy".

Another fallacy of post modernism, cultural relativity. You are right on. Not all cultures have contributed to the richness and greatness of OUR nation. Message to those who don't measure up YOU ARE NOT WELCOME HERE, GO BACK TO YOUR SH*THOLE COUNTRY AND LIVE LIKE THE FILTH YOU ARE.

You are right on. Not all cultures have contributed to the richness and greatness of OUR nation.

Even African-Americans -- despite their troublesome assimilation and ongoing difficulties -- have shown themselves to be a net-positive to our country.

But Islamics have never shown themselves to be anything but personally explosive.

"personally explosive" bump.

In most melting pots, a layer of scum or slag floats to the top.

If I were a Turk, I'd be offended by the tone of this thread. Turks are Muslim and have contributed a lot to the industrial growth of Germany and the Low Countries. They've also made valuable contributions to the Western Alliance and do not deserve to be lumped into the same category as Islamists.

People do need to be careful with the tone of the statements, because we not only need the Turks on our side, they are the only successful long-term model of civilizing Islam. Thanks to the Turks, the pattern of civilized Islam is also developing in Malaysia and some of the former Russian Republics.

An Ataturk-like leader could very well be more successful than thousands of cluster bombs. (Albeit that we may yet have to drop cluster bombs in order to surpress the Islamists to the extent that the next Ataturk can arise.)

I think you have a point. Turks are unusually motivated, considering the vast majority of sun-baked UV-addled black-rock-worshipping terrorist-bombing lazy, shiftless, backstabbing Islamics.

I could abide Turkish immigration. Not one other Islamic would pass muster, however.
