INDONESIA: Religious Students Riot

April 25, 2002; Today is the 52nd anniversary of the founding of the RMS (South Maluku Republic) organization, a long banned movement to establish a Christian state here. As a result, Christian separatists are holding more demonstrations in the Maluku islands. The Christians feel that the government cannot, or will not, protect them from Moslem militants.

April 23, 2002; The government has banned foreign journalists from the Moluku islands for 20 days, in anticipation of demonstrations by Christian separatists. The ban ends on April 30th. Over the decades, thousands of Mulukan Christians have moved to Europe, where they provide potential financial support for an armed separatist movement in the Malukus. The government doesn't want separatist demonstrations in the Muluks to show up on TV for this reason.

While im not in favor of a "Christian" state per say, I am in favor of a state with laws based on morals presented under Christian/Judeo practice... I guess you would say I would prefer a "Free country".

I think the Christians are looking towards a "state of self preservation"

I would settle for at this point a state that doesn't let Muslim extremists rape and pillage the Christian people there.

Interesting. Are they armed because they need to defend themselves from the Muslims or are they, in fact, operating an organization of armed insurrection against the government? Honest question, not trying to equate them with Al Queda.

Are these folks "Christian" like the folks in Northern Ireland are "Catholic" and "Protestant"?

Where in the Gospels do we see Jesus advocating armed insurrection? If these people are patriots looking for freedom of conscience and worship, seeking to overthrow their oppressors, then more power to them, and pass the gunpowder. But I have a problem with any civil war or revolution being done in the name of Christianity.

Very well put. The demonstrations will put them in even more danger. It is a hopeless situation under the present, weak government that is deathly afraid if the Islamists.

"April 23, 2002; The government has banned foreign journalists from the Moluku islands for 20 days, in anticipation of demonstrations by Christian separatists."

Is this what Mike Savage would call "the SILENCED majority"?

"The ban ends on April 30th. Over the decades, thousands of Mulukan Christians have moved to Europe, where they provide potential financial support for an armed separatist movement in the Malukus. The government doesn't want separatist demonstrations in the Muluks to show up on TV for this reason."

Good for them....why should they sit around and be sitting ducks for muslim extremists with automatic weapons, and government that has shown how much it cares about human life in E. Timor?

The headline uses the term "riot." What does that mean in this context?

The Christians feel that the government cannot, or will not, protect them from Moslem militants.

I don't blame them for taking up arms in self defence.
Christians are persecuted here in the U.S. , too. It's easy to understand how they feel. God bless and protect them.
