Also, there was a man named Rodale, who was the publisher of "Prevention" Magazine who died early. It was quite a shock to readers of the magazine!

Happened so long ago, I don't remember the details. Heart attach, if I remember correctly.

That's because the more manly you guys become, the more conservative you become. They go hand in hand. Liberalism is for sissy boys. :)

Likewise, us women become more conservative as we become more feminine. It's like there's a natural order to things--conservatism is the optimum mindset for humans. :)

Just my crackpot theory I made up on the spot....

He apparently liked to pig out and had been a smoker. He most likely would have keeled over 10 years earlier if not for the running.

Ahhhh, vindication! ;)

I thought you spray it on like you do the Androsol. Was that Berserk comment meaning you hit the weights hard or you had a little rage?

Fixx's father died in his early 30's from genetic heart disease. As a result of Jim's running, Jim enjoyed a full life for another 12-15 years beyond what his father had lived. Jim's reluctance to visit doctors, probably as a result of the trauma from his father's death, is the prime reason why he suffered his fatal heart attack.

The cramping is only a problem with over-dehydration. Mineral supplements should be taken, especially one Potassium tablet per day. I am told that cramping is due to an imbalance in the mucles due to mineral depletion that comes from less water, which if full of minerals.

BTW, I just competed a couple of weeks ago, dieting really hard at the end. Now two weeks later, I am have having some real carb cravings! If I wasn't careful, I could sit down and eat a box full of cereal each day [especially Raisin Bran!].

It's not for everyone, but low-carbohydrate can be a great way to go if you just want an intense, temporary dieting experience.

I agree.

Since several folks here are discussing supplements & carbs, has anyone had any experience with using L-glutamine to reduce carb cravings and/or L-carnitine for fat metabolism? I’ve seen it recommended on a couple of low car sites.

I watch what I eat and gave up regular amounts of beer.

Pappy, have you taken leave of your senses? "In heaven there is no beer, thats why we drink it here".

I think that most people who disparage the Atkins diet are confusing the Induction Phase with the entire program. I stayed on the induction phase for several months and then proceeded to the Ogoing Weight Loss Phase and am now slowing phasing in the Maintenance Phase. At each level you increase your carb intake...up to the point where they add to weight gain. I eat fruit, a few potatoes and I even have an occaisonal helping of pasta. I'll have a beer at the ballpark. But I'll never go back to my old way of eating..ever.

I take glutamine [5-10 grams daily]. I have not read anything about it reducing carb cravings, though. I use it for muscle growth and to keep muscle when dieting.

Carnitine is also a good fat burner. But it is expensive.

One supplement, which has a proven record and is pretty cheap is Chromium Picolinate. It has been proven to help build muscle while reducing fat. It costs $10 for a three to four month supply and it helps eliminate carb cravings by leveling off the blood sugar/ insulin levels in the body.

Berserk, as IN Hitting the weights. I have a problem with pullups. I tend to let the elbow break at the low point. I was working out in my garage, doing them fromm the rafters as a finisher, and continued long beyond the point I should've stopped...so I was flexing ut the elbow, then pulling up repeatedly.

I started using CP about a month ago, and it does curb hunger and increase muscle mass. How much it contributes to muscle I don't know, as I also started beginners weight training at the same time.

Thanks for the info. I have used CP in the past, but honestly I have a hard time telling if any particular vitamin or supplement is making a difference. I'm jealous of those who can discern a difference. Maybe the glutamine doesn't work so well, if you're taking it and still have strong carb cravings . . . .
