Freeper Big Gun Enthusiast Advice on .50 BMG Needed....and Appreciated.

My younger brother who is a "black gun" enthusiast has decided to buy a .50 BMG bolt action with his next commission check. He has asked me to "loan" part of the financing. I am unfamiliar with the .50s but have read up on most of them. I agree with him that the time to buy one is now since the future looks possibly bleak for these guns. I would appreciate any advice from anyone who has hands on experience with any of the various makes. Further advice on suitable optics would likewise be welcome.

I suggested the AR-30 Lapua instead but he insists that now is the time to buy a .50, that there is still ample time to purchase a Lapua in his view.

I have the AR-50. It is very well made, and very heavy. Because of the muzzle brake, it cannot shoot saboted rounds though. Make sure he knows that.

Barrett series or Serbu, McMillan all are quality rigs. I personally dislike the Daisy/AMAC and must admit that I have never personally shot or handled the serbu 50 just some of their other products that are high quality .

If you can afford it Accuracy International IMHO makes the best .50, then Mcmillan, then Barrett in that order for accuracy from off the shelf rigs.

Go custom if your looking for real accuracy..........

well a 50 cal is definately a gun that may be extinct soon. Esp. as they can shoot through an engine block, effectively disabling the vehicle. That and having an effective range of over 1 mile. A gun with those abilites surely can't go unnoticed by law makers for too long.

Here's my Barrett, (Sitting in the back) best of the bunch for the money. (About $3k plus scope.) Shoots as straight as the ammo you're using will allow, built like a tank, easy to field strip, (about 20 seconds) and looks cool to boot. Never had a single problem with it either, and the folks at Barrett are the best when it comes to customer service.

I knew you'd go for the Cadillac Squantos..top of the line..Accuracy International....man, they make some incredible stuff....Barrett is a local homeboy.....I'm just not sure. The Serbu is economical. I think the Serbu doesn't require bolt removal to reload either does it?

The Armalite AR-50 and Barrett bolt actions are both good choices in the $3K price range. To that you will add at least another $1K for a good scope.

Another option which I have used is the Robar RC-50, which I would have to classify as best of breed, but a fair bit more $$$ too.

Nice....Barrett...made locally...is in the running for sure. He's got that double drum mag on his Bushie V-Match as well....got from some outfit in Abilene....nice to sit at the bench and shoot for an hour without reloading isn't it?

IMO, you should loan him the money entirely "off of the books," and should not acquire any property interest in the rifle in question. Primary reason: lack of control of the actions of another...

I have never shot one but the makers claim the recoil is about like a 12 gauge 3" magnum but not as sharp...more of a push. I've seen Barrett's demo download at bench on bags...it's pushing for sure...course he's not a big guy. I would guess it's up there with a 375H&H or the like.

We'll look into the Robar. The AR-50 is in the running...someone just pointed out no sabots in the AR-50. I'm a primitive hunter and understand sabots from that perspective but fear I'm not fully comprehending the point on the .50.

The .50 cal Shooters Association is a good place to seek information. They have a website. www.fcsa.org I have a friend with a State Arms single shot. Good accuracy. The choice all depends on what is the intended use. P.S. A .50 with a decent brake has no more recoil than a 12 Gauge shotgun. Erik
