ANTI-SEMITISM WATCH:Norway's parliament wouldn't let a visitor wear a Star of David on his jacket out of solidarity with Israelis under siege. Bruce Bawer has the details:
Dagbladet reporter Cato Vogt-Kielland writes that "Tveitt went into the Parliament building dressed in a thin summer jacket with the Star of David on the chest pocket. But after he had talked in the Parliament restaurant with Parliament members from the Progress, Conservative, and Labor parties, he was sought out by two security guards who asked him to come with them 'because they had received reactions' to Tveitts flag symbol. 'I asked who had reacted, and what they had reacted to, but got no answer,' said Tveitt. 'I didnt think that showing solidarity with Israel would create reactions in Parliament especially not in Parliament.' The two guards escorted him to the wardrobe. After he had hung up his jacket, they followed him back to his table. As Tveitt points out, "People walk around [in Parliament] with Palestinian scarves and other pro-Palestinian symbols without any reaction."If you can read Norwegian, here's the original story. This from the same country that gives out Nobel prizes, in which some judges claim they now regret giving Shimon Peres such a prize. They have no regrets, as Bruce points out, about giving one to Arafat. Figures.

Side note: Hanna Kvanmo, recently famous in the blog world for her asinine comment that she wished the Nobel committee could recall the Peace prize it gave to Shimon Peres of Israel (but not the one they gave to Arafat, a terrorist!), joined the German Red Cross at the eastern front during World War II, and stayed there until the end of the war. For this, she was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment. Then she joined the Socialist Left party, and became a major political figure in Norway, consistently serving "gems" such as the one mentioned above...

Recently a lot of weblogs have been outraged over comments made by Norwegian Hanna Kvanmo who sits on the Nobel Peace Prize committee. Kvanmo expressed regrets that the committee had awarded Israel's Shimon Peres the award -- but, of course, she apparently thinks Yasser Arafat has done a standup job of upholding the prize's values.
Fredrik Norman fills in the rest. Ms. Kvanmo's position is a bit easier to understand in light of her activities during World War II.
On April 9, 1940, Nazi Germany invaded Norway and conquered it in about two months. Kvanmo was one of about 1,000 young Norwegian women who joined the German Red Cross and went to work on the eastern front taking care of Nazi soldiers.
While the Nazis were rampaging across Europe, leaving death and destruction in their wake, Kvanmo chose to spend the war helping to treat war criminals (among other things, Kvanmo and others treated the wounds of members of the SS).
At the end of the war, many of these nurses were returned to Norway where they were sentenced to varying terms of prison for aiding the enemy.
Leave it to a woman who aided the Nazi war effort to lecture the rest of the world about peace.

The strong growth in Norway must be viewed, among other factors, in connection with the development of the oil industry after the initial finds of oil on the Norwegian shelf at the end of the 1960s. From 1980 to 2000, oil production has increased by over 300 per cent and Norway is now the world's second biggest exporter of oil.
Approximately 77 per cent of Norwegian exports go to EU countries, while a good 68 per cent of imports come from these countries. Exports to the USA are on the same level as those to Asia, but imports from Asia are significantly higher than those from the USA. The Nordic countries, Great Britain and Germany are Norway's most important trading partners. Great Britain and Germany are major markets for Norwegian oil and gas. Sweden is the country that Norway imports most from. Exports of goods and services accounted for 46 percent of the GDP in 2000, while imports accounted 31 per cent. Exports of oil and gas constituted 46 per cent of total exports.
Canada buys Norwegian oil, but I'm not sure if the U.S. does.
Hej da, Fred! Aw, don't feel bad--this thread got a lot of posts, and they weren't all unfriendly to "Norge."
By the way, do you know a good brand of canned Norwegian reindeer meatballs, and where I can buy them? :)
Doesn't matter. The "Israel Uber Alles" crowd is bound and determined to smear every country on the face of the earth which has one person there who doesn't follow their partei line. They've gone after everyone from the Pope to the President of the United States to Billy Graham to Putin and Schroeder. No person, no country is safe.
Mange tack, Fred! "Joika" is EX-ACTLY the name I remember!!!
2. I am horribly disapointed with the Norwegians. After the elections in which the conservative parties regained control of parliament on a platform against (mostly Muslim0 immigratns, I had such high hopes. I had planned to visit Olso and Bergen this summer after visiting relatives in Sweden. My mother and sister did this two years ago and had a great time. Now I wont even eat Nowegian lox.
3. As for the member of the Nobel committee having essentially joined as civilian adjunct to the SS, I am not suprised.
The Danes and the Norwegians are so closely related (Norway was up until less than 200 years ago governed by Denmark, and the Norwegian language is as close to Danish as say, Serbian is to Croatian--closer in fact and with far fewer intermural hard feelings!), and yet so different in their behavior during WW II. To be fair, the Norwegians did have a resistance movement against Nazi occupation, but they were more notorious during the war for their homegrown Nazi collaborator Vidkun Quisling, whose name to this day is synonymous with "traitor."
Dude, it is one of the prototypes of the "blog." (I like that word "prototype" :) ).
Then why didn't Tveitt "react" to that?
Joika meatballs Reindeer and other typical Norwegian canned delicacies
Karlsen forteller at til og med joika-salget til USA øker. Selv om dette blir betraktet som en kuriositet, representerer Trønder-Mat sitt USA-salg bortimot det eneste norske kjøttproduktet på utlanet.
Am I right in reading the above Norwegian that way, Fred? Even if I'm wrong, I think I'll write "Tronder-Mat" and ask for an exclusive!
Not true. See Snopes. Denmark did see that not many jews were killed, but the king never wore the star.
