ANTI-SEMITISM WATCH:Norway's parliament wouldn't let a visitor wear a Star of David on his jacket out of solidarity with Israelis under siege. Bruce Bawer has the details:

Dagbladet reporter Cato Vogt-Kielland writes that "Tveitt went into the Parliament building dressed in a thin summer jacket with the Star of David on the chest pocket. But after he had talked in the Parliament restaurant with Parliament members from the Progress, Conservative, and Labor parties, he was sought out by two security guards who asked him to come with them 'because they had received reactions' to Tveitt’s flag symbol. 'I asked who had reacted, and what they had reacted to, but got no answer,' said Tveitt. 'I didn’t think that showing solidarity with Israel would create reactions in Parliament – especially not in Parliament.' The two guards escorted him to the wardrobe. After he had hung up his jacket, they followed him back to his table. As Tveitt points out, "People walk around [in Parliament] with Palestinian scarves and other pro-Palestinian symbols without any reaction."
If you can read Norwegian, here's the original story. This from the same country that gives out Nobel prizes, in which some judges claim they now regret giving Shimon Peres such a prize. They have no regrets, as Bruce points out, about giving one to Arafat. Figures.

Side note: Hanna Kvanmo, recently famous in the blog world for her asinine comment that she wished the Nobel committee could recall the Peace prize it gave to Shimon Peres of Israel (but not the one they gave to Arafat, a terrorist!), joined the German Red Cross at the eastern front during World War II, and stayed there until the end of the war. For this, she was sentenced to 5 years imprisonment. Then she joined the Socialist Left party, and became a major political figure in Norway, consistently serving "gems" such as the one mentioned above...

Recently a lot of weblogs have been outraged over comments made by Norwegian Hanna Kvanmo who sits on the Nobel Peace Prize committee. Kvanmo expressed regrets that the committee had awarded Israel's Shimon Peres the award -- but, of course, she apparently thinks Yasser Arafat has done a standup job of upholding the prize's values.

Fredrik Norman fills in the rest. Ms. Kvanmo's position is a bit easier to understand in light of her activities during World War II.

On April 9, 1940, Nazi Germany invaded Norway and conquered it in about two months. Kvanmo was one of about 1,000 young Norwegian women who joined the German Red Cross and went to work on the eastern front taking care of Nazi soldiers.

While the Nazis were rampaging across Europe, leaving death and destruction in their wake, Kvanmo chose to spend the war helping to treat war criminals (among other things, Kvanmo and others treated the wounds of members of the SS).

At the end of the war, many of these nurses were returned to Norway where they were sentenced to varying terms of prison for aiding the enemy.

Leave it to a woman who aided the Nazi war effort to lecture the rest of the world about peace.

Do I have products? What the hell does that mean? Do you have a brain?

Settle down there sonny. Since you were yapping about not boycotting Norwegian products I take it you are either a Norwegian or have some interest in how we spend our money. Tell me what products Norway has or is that request not clear enough for you as well?

Do you have "products"?

They make nice sweaters, but they are too expensive for my blood.

I have Helly Hansen sailing gear, I buy Jarlsberg cheese for sandwiches (its similar to but better than swiss), and they make Linje Aquavit.

It would be very difficult for me to boycott Norwegian products, even if I wanted to. No offence, but I can't think of a single indentifiable brand of anything from Norway that I could boycott. :)

I'm sure you guys export something-or-other here, but darned if I have a clue what it is...

There's a brand of canned reindeer meatballs in cream sauce out of Norway that I love (no, I'm not joking). I can't remember the brand name but I do remember it had a logo of a "Laughing Lapp," presumably the guy who herded the reindeer that were turned into the canned meatballs.

That clearly insensitive use of a stereotype of a Norwegian national minority, coupled with the sky-high saturated fat and cholesterol content, made me doubtful I would ever buy any again, as delicious as they were.

And now this!

Oil is their biggest export. They export more oil than any country but Saudi Arabia. Most of it comes from the North Sea. I guess most of it winds up in Europe, but some must make it over the ocean. Norwegians are also big in shipping. There are only about 5 million people there, so they're not a huge economic power.

Big fishing fleet, too. Plus they're pretty good at hothouse agriculture, given their short growing season. Don't know how much fish or veggies are for export, though.

The Norwegians are probably the most conservative right wing people on the whole continent.

Please explain your statement. Norway has high taxes, and a government directed economy. Hardly conservative.

If you mean that Norwegians are racist redneck white people, please explain that. For others reading incorrect stuff on this thread, the Nobel prize comes from Sweden, not Norway. The flags of Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland and Finland ALL feature a cross.

It is unfair to condemn all of the Norwegians for something that one set of people said. How would we like if the rest of the world judged America on what the liberals said,eh?

Who is condemning all of the Norwegian ones? Just the anti-Semitic ones who seem to run the Nobel Peace Prize committee and their parliament.

And I think most of us on this forum condemn America's liberals.

You got that right. But this outrage demands an American response.

So I promise to personally spank every Norwegein Au Pair I can get my hands on.

Obviously when they returned from their pillaging expeditions, the Vikings made sure there was only enough room on their ships for the great looking ones.

Absolutely! Last time I bought one was at least five years ago at a Norwegian specialty shop on the corner of 9th and Pacific in San Pedro, the port of Los Angeles. Together with those other seafaring and fishing folks, the Italians and the Croatians, the Norwegians---believe it or not---used to be a major ethnic community there in San Pedro.

Alas! I went there just two or three weeks ago with my son while he was visiting on spring break---and the little store was...GONE! I'm going to keep looking though---any Freeper Norwegians living in the Southern California area please let me and gnarledmaw know of any Scandinavian food places in our area.
