The NAACP has criticized Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe for his government's decision to charge opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai with treason
Kweisi Mfume, President & CEO, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), today criticized Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe for his government's decision to charge opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai with treason following his recent presidential election.
Mfume sent a letter of protest to the Zimbabwe Ambassador to the United States.
Mfume said: "The election is over. This sort of heavy handedness to kill off all opposition voices is too much for anyone to be silent about. These actions indicate that Mugabe does not want to live by the basic tenets of a democratic election. You cannot run a democracy by jailing the opposition and everyone who disagrees with you."
Tsvangirai, the leader of the Movement for Democratic Change, led the opposition to Mugabe in last week's presidential election. Yesterday, Tsvangirai was charged with treason for an alleged plot to assassinate Mugabe.
Mfume said actions like these "can have a chilling effect on democracy in Zimbabwe and work against the precepts of the democratic process."
In a letter to Simbi Veke Mubako, Zimbabwe Ambassador to the United States, Mfume said: "The NAACP believes that democracy is a necessary precondition for social, political and economic transformation and crucial to attracting assistance for the development of the developing world. It is in this spirit that I write to you concerning the treatment of Morgan Tsvangirai and other opposition leaders."
Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization. Its half-million adult and youth members throughout the United States and the world are premier advocates for civil rights in their communities, conducting voter mobilization and monitoring equal opportunity in the public and private sectors.
No mention of the post-election thuggery, rape, intimidation and murder.
No mention of the farm invasions that have driven 200,000 people off the land in order to replace them with a small number of party cadre.
No mention of the state of anarchy to which Zimbabwe has descended.
Before someone else says it, I'll say it:
Hey leadpenny, do ya really think so?
He was far too busy playing the role of race hustling poverty pimp ambulance chaser, to
care about any legitimate concerns. He and his ilk care as much about his people as does the
National Alliance.
This, at least, represents progress, however slight.
Congressman Billybob
The intellectual gangsters over at the NAACP have been apologists for every tinhorn African dictator since the various independence movements began in the late fifties.
I am not surprised that Mfume only now begins speaking out when Mugabe starts embarrasing the other black leaders in Africa and in the African diaspora. As was mentioned above, he said nothing about the illegal farm confiscations, the pogrom of the white population, and the executions of white farmers.
When white folks get killed, it's okay, I guess.
Be Seeing You,
Chris
Hello! A small but true acknowledgment of the horror going on in Zimbabwe.
Clarence Thomas, et al can confirm this NAACP position.
I'm sure it was merely on oversight on Mfume's part that he neglected to mention the slaughter and intimidation of white farmers in Zimbabwe.
Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization. Its half-million adult and youth members throughout the United States and the world are premier advocates for civil rights in their communities, conducting voter mobilization and monitoring equal opportunity in the public and private sectors.
For the Zim's, who apparently took this verbatim from the NAACP's web site, they also specialize in shakedown operations, flag desecration and tourism inhibition.
Not Mfume's biggest fan, I note. lol
Hehehehe. . that's putting it lightly. I've learned to love the confused/upset look on people's faces when I give my opinion on people like him. I guess black folks aren't supposed to say anything negative about their media appointed spokesmen!
The sad truth is people like Mfume actually help the likes of National Alliance and WCOTC.
You're absolutely correct; keep the faith!
