Two Senate candidates walk out of GOP dinner
March 26, 2002 1:16 am
CONCORD, N.C. -- Two Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate walked out of a GOP dinner after a party official refused their request to speak.
Elizabeth Dole was the keynote speaker at the Cabarrus County Republican Party's annual Reagan Day dinner on Monday. Other GOP candidates were invited to attend but not speak.
One of the candidates, Ada Fisher, posted herself outside the club with a sign protesting the denial of what she called her "free speech."
When Dole arrived, Fisher complained about the perceived slight.
"I'm delighted to have you come in and speak," Dole told her. "Why don't you go tell them that it's fine with me."
Dole made similar comments to rival Jim Snyder of Lexington.
Last week Cabarrus GOP Chairman David Black said Dole campaign officials had said they prefer other candidates vying for retiring Sen. Jesse Helm's seat not speak at Monday's dinner, which served as a party fund-raiser.
Though Snyder left, Fisher went into the dinner and took a seat at a table with fellow Senate candidate Douglas Sellers of Rowan County. During the introductions, Fisher blurted out: "Do we get our chance to speak that Mrs. Dole said we could have?"
"Mrs. Fisher I'm sorry," Black replied. "But we're running about 45 minutes late tonight."
Fisher and Sellers stood up. Turning to leave, Sellers announced, "I'm not afraid to look at any of you. Please don't be afraid to look at any of us."
Fisher, Snyder and other GOP candidates have complained about what they see as the preferential treatment party officials accord Dole. Critics complain that Dole is getting unusual help from party officials -- including President Bush, who has plugged her on three trips to North Carolina since January.
As she left the Speedway Club, Fisher was still angry.
"I can beat anybody in a fair race," she said. "But when you tie me down and stuff my mouth so I can't talk, it's a little difficult."

Correct.
At this stage of the game I actually hope he loses.
Agreed, at least Hillary had the sense to go to a state where she wouldn't have to do a 180 on most of her issues to get elected. Liddy is worse than Hillary.
Firstly and most important to me, Dole is a socialist. Secondly, she has not been here in 40 years. In fact she has voted in Kansas for several years, yet never lived there, her home has, like Al Gore, always been Washington.
We have good conservative candidates here that have been shunted aside by Bush and the RNC. I resent that very much. In fact I believe this is the first time in history that a sitting president has "hand picked" a candidate for a state, months before a primary. Many of us complained of Kennedy and Clinton being carpetbaggers but our principles go down the drain when it is a republican.
Dole win at the price of my vote??? Never...Look at the last senate vote, eleven "republicans" voted lockstep with their democrat brothers. Electing "republicans" has been proven fruitless for many years. Conservatives are what we need, not democrats parading around in a $2000 republican suit.
I guess Fisher and Snyder didn't read the small print. I think they may be a couple of whiners.
We had out Lincoln Day dinner here in Brazoria County. Tom DeLay was the keynote speaker and he was the only one who spoke. Of course there were several meet your candidate forums all over the county before the primaries and at that time each candidate was given a certain amount of time to state their positions and take questions. There were debates. They also went out, knocked on doors, shook some hands and met people.
What you mean to say is that the ruling class elite who are only interested in keeping their own small inner circle in power have picked one of their own yet again. Big surprise.
Richard W.
So what you are saying is that this is another of those elections where you hold your nose and vote for the least odiferous of the candidates. This is exactly why this country is in the mess it is in and incrementally heading down the path of Social Democracy (communism lite) that we find ourselves on.
There is no saving the Constitution or the Republic of the United States if these RINO's are the best the Republican party has to offer.
Elizabeth Dole my indeed win the contest for the Senate seat from the state of North Carolina and maybe she will surprise conservatives and actually defend the Constitution. But I wouldn't bet on that happening. Her political philosophy and track record in no way indicate that to have even the remotest possibility.
But I do not agree with those that call her a carpet bagger and compare her to Hillary! on the issue. I also do not approve of the way the state GOP has forced her upon us and am even more disappointed that Bush and the National GOP are so behind her prior to a primary victory.
Will she be better than Erskin Bowels or Elaine Marshall? Yes. Is that reason enough to get on the Dole bandwagon? No.
Just the contrary. Both national parties long ago discovered that they could not be significant players in public policy by excluding people who disagree with them. That led to the "big tent," the "art of compromise," and constant wrangling. Nevertheless, every attempt to form parties based on exclusive views has failed. That's why we have a couple dozen fringe parties scattered on the political landscape. Those fringe parties, far from electing governments that pursue their agenda and their agenda alone, cede to the "big tents" the power to muddle along in mushy compromise. Form a "republican" party without most of the republicans and what do you have? Pat Buchanan and the eleven people who agree with him on everything.
The last time I compromised my principles, was to vote for Arlen Specter. I vowed that was the last time I would vote for the "lesser of two evils". There was the same clamor, better to have a republican in name than nothing. Well that is what we got, another socialist. No more of that voting for socialists of any party.
Life is full of disappointments...and this is one of them. They sound like a couple of whiners.
I had the suspreme disgust of having worked for Dole at one time. I didnt like here then or now as an administrator and that dislike was shared by most of the other people.
Fred, we MUST take this a step at a time. Get Liddy elected, THEN we'll hold her tootsies to the Fire. Remember?
The Whole Key to effecting Change in D.C. is to get Repubs elected. When WE TALK, THEY Listen! That's the way it is. That and Name Recognition. That's the way it is. Yeah, get more Repubs in, with name recognition, hold their tootsies to the fire, talk to them, and DON'T criticize them! We're at WAR!
O.K., I've gotta go throw up my breakfast, but I hope you've got The Big Picture now.
Boy does this sound familiar. They have chosen their annointed one, the one "they" want, the hell with the others. This same $hit happened to me last year, F'nnn RINO'S....
