For Immediate Release
Office of the Press Secretary
March 20, 2002
Statement by the President
Like many Republicans and Democrats in the Congress, I support common-sense reforms to end abuses in our campaign finance system. The reforms passed today, while flawed in some areas, still improve the current system overall, and I will sign them into law.
The legislation makes some important progress on the timeliness of disclosure, individual contribution limits, and banning soft money from corporations and labor unions, but it does present some legitimate constitutional questions. I continue to believe the best reform is full and timely disclosure of campaign contributions.

Let's get back to racking up a good batting average, shall we? One thing about the big home-run hitters. You seea lot of home runs, and about three or four times as many strikeouts.
On the other hand, hitters like that Suzuki guy in Seattle will run up a high batting average, and they will often do better when the going gets rough. The other side's got a three-run lead as we come up to bat in the bottom of the seventh. Let's not push too hard for a home run, but let's just get some singles and catch up as best we can.
In a way, isn't libertarianism a form of individual secession? e.g. "Stay off my land, stay out of my life." The diametric opposite of socialism or communism.
Which is why I would (for my own personal agenda) of course, remain quiet. The nations moral fabric is tearing by the day , causing chaos and dependancy. Maybe it wouldn't be such a bad thing (IMHO) and I would remain totally silent. Color me biased.
If he doesn't sign this bill the press has his poll numbers under 40 percent in a month. I don't want this bill anymore than you do , but it's the reality of politics. We got beat on this one, it happens, live with it.
The fact is that if he doesn't sign it we're done. All the talk on this thread about integrity and the Constitution would give us Gore in the next election.
It's amazing how many in here are willing to lose the war as long as we win the battles.
David
The two major political parties are not at odds over the Constitution. They firmly believe it is an old document that is written by simple Congressional legislation. Just like Bush's endorsement of CFR.
BTW, Bush signed the Patriot Act giving law enforcement carte blanche over your individual rights of liberty guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. Moreover Bush permitted the largest violator of human crimes to receive permanent trade status (MFN) with the US. Bush wants to sign methods to legalize criminals that illegally entered our nation.
I am convinced that there are blind people on FR, particularly because of folks like you.
wrong answer!
Then, you added the following commentary:The words are important because they give us a way around them.
I asked if your comment was a quote from Marx or Lenin. Perhaps you forgot to extend the quotation marks.
Either way, it's a cynical way to view one's oath of office as president of the United States.
It's like saying, "It depends on what the meaning of the word, 'is', is."
President Bush signing this bill is not politically astute--it is political cowardice and a betrayal of his oath of office.
And that is exactly the bug up my butt. Little Whiny McCain still has not forgiven those mean, old nasty people who said bad things about him in SC. And in the truest sense of "don't get mad, get even" he did. He just screwed us.
Agreed, and he put Bush on the spot, "send me a bill and i'll sign it" just for political revenge.
We're venting our anger at Bush for NOT lieing , when the real target should be McCain for the evil set-up!
Who do you think the base is? It isn't Free Republic exactly ---but it's very similar to us who are on here. I've talked with people who say the exact same things people on here say ---but they don't even own computers and never have been on-line. We're just a good cross-section of the actual base.
Why are you so upset Billy? The President said he will sign this bill, so he CAN still send Ted Olson to attack it the same day. Sounds to me like your plan is still on track.
It probably does, in some areas. Of course, life experience can't just be measured in years, and it doesn't always have a bearing on the strength of one's arguments.
For example, an older person who dismisses their younger opponent's argument, simply on the basis of his age, is relying on ad hominem tactics, and thus shows the weakness of his own position.
When just elected, Bush said "send me a bill, and I'll sign it."
At the time, Republicans held all the powers, and he probably thought the bill would be fair.
Then Jeffords kissed gepfart, and the plans changed.
Now, a completely bogus, unconstitutional bill sent by Marxist dumpocraps and traidor McVain was sent to make Bush a liar.
Does he veto and relive his fathers downfall, or does he sign to prove he wouldn't lie to the American people?
The REAL crimminals here are the dumpocraps and traitor McVain. They should be the FR target! Not Bush for trying to fulfill his "promise."
Hopefully, God will reward him for his truthfullness somehow. He's stuck between a rock and a hard place.
