Statement by the President: "... I will sign (CFR) into law."
Office of the Press Secretary ^ | March 20, 2002 | George W. Bush

Posted on 03/20/2002 4:33:41 PM PST by erk

The White House, President George W. Bush

For Immediate Release
Office of the Press Secretary
March 20, 2002

Statement by the President

Like many Republicans and Democrats in the Congress, I support common-sense reforms to end abuses in our campaign finance system.  The reforms passed today, while flawed in some areas, still improve the current system overall, and I will sign them into law.

The legislation makes some important progress on the timeliness of disclosure, individual contribution limits, and banning soft money from corporations and labor unions, but it does present some legitimate constitutional questions.  I continue to believe the best reform is full and timely disclosure of campaign contributions.

The dems have him right were they want him.

The dems have no issues, which is why Daschle is desperate to hammer Ridge in front of Senate committees.

Democrats are dying right in front of your eyes, and you don't see it.

How old are you?

What difference does that make? Let's stick to the subject.

I dont think he's in a position to say that the bill he's going to sign is unconstitutional. Thats the job of the courts.

Good grief, VA! -- The prez is charged as the prime defender/protector of the constitution. He shouldn't have taken his oath if he didn't think that was his position. -- Course, that isn't his position . -- It's yours. And incredible, like most you have.

But I forget you libertarians keeps ignoring that branch of government.

Dream on. Libertarians are the stauchest defenders of the original constitution and USSC decisions that uphold it, - on this forum.

Is that a quote from Marx or Lenin ?

It's a quote from St. Thomas More.

That's SAINT Thomas More.

Well, that's obvious. I have a Rep and Senator who voted for this (Wolf and Warner) up for re-election. Both are pretty safe, so I might go third party or leave it blank.

This is the only black mark I have to give the President. I'm got going to run home and sulk like some damn crybaby. I'm going to go out, and get better folks in the House and Senate. I see no other option but to beat these folks in the primary if at all possible. And to keep trying until they retire or I pull it off.

You don't stop fighting when the battle is OVER !!.. and it is not over.. The President still has my FULL SUPPORT.. but I will strongly OPPOSE him on this issue until it is over.. and we have a LONG way to go on this..

As for the rest of the agenda I say...Mr. President .. KEEP up the good work.. and don't take all this critisim personally.. try to learn from it, and as my Dad always tells me... "Do the right thing, even if everyone else is doing the wrong thing"..

If congress passed a law REQUIRING all FUTURE candidates to be Conservative/Christians (Which I am) I would STRONGLY OPPOSE it because it violates the Constitution, even though it would be of GREAT benefit to my personal agenda

Who in the hell are you trying to kid?

"If it were mandated that all politicians were to be conservative Christians....um....I'll play devils advocate and say.....our forefathers were."

You need to go look at what Ben Franklin and some of the others were, I don't believe they exactly fit 'conservative' or perhaps even 'Christian'. They were however moral philosophers.

I believe you are mostly correct... However they made it very clear in the constitution that in public service it is about principles and doing the "right" thing.. Which is why they specifically FORBID the "establishment" of religion.. however wrote into LAW the Principles of Divine PRINCIPLES...

The previous posters are right, about the only thing that could be considered unconstitutional is the 60 day limit on adds before an election that target a specific individual campaigning for an elected posistion. The SC has already ruled that the right to give money or property to someone for whatever reason is not protected under freespeach.

"Libertarians are the stauchest defenders of the original constitution "
"If not the letter and spirit of the Declaration."

The Bill of Rights is a 100% libertarian document (albeit contained in a conservative Constitution). When the neanderthal conservatives figure this out, there's bound to be some catalepsy at their keyboards.
