Campaign Finance Reform Passes Senate

After seven years of negotiations, the Senate passed a campaign finance reform bill 60-40 on Wednesday, overhauling rules on television advertising and banning "soft money" donations to national political parties.

"What we've really done for a couple of hundred million Americans is to give them the opportunity to be heard again. ... They've been rendered silent by the influence of big money," said Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., a sponsor of the bill whose commitment to the issue became a platform issue in his unsuccessful bid for president in 2000.

Oh, sure, this law will make all politicians become decent, honest and honorable. In a pig's eye. The only thing it does is shift around the money handling so as to fool the idiots who make up the voter pool. Public funding - let's make everyone pay to elect these miscreants. Bah! A pox on them all! The only way to restore some of the lost liberty in this country is to limit taxation - radically. Say, a flat tax of 10% - period - with a Constitutional amendment that says that only a supermajority of the voters can change it.

Yah, like 99.999999% of the popular vote to raise taxes above the 10% limit!!!! Let's see them give themselves a raise then when doing so would put 5000 welfare recip. out in the cold. Or kick 5000 seniors off of medicaid. Let's see their "compassion" then.

Back to the Bill of Rights. Sure hope the Supremes have some sort of integrity and on this one - Rule it out 9-0
So! If information comes out about a candidate 10 days prior to an election then the opposition cannot advertise it or call it to anyone's attention by paying for the advertising space.
That means that we the public are dependent upon those who control the news media to do the right thing and let us know about it.
Now who is kidding who?
If this the right thing to do then why is not applicable immediately? Close offf the war chests of those in power who can use them against those who are just opening their campaigns - can't be fair and right and the Supremes should cut through this one in short order.

Have Bush sign it and send it to the Supremes and lets get on with it.
As much as I dislike the negative ads I will accept them in that they do not stifle the ability to obtain information . Then I will sort out the information.
When a candidate makes a statement to one group I would hope the other group would be able to get the message out to those on the opposite side of the idea.

REAL campaign finance reform needs to consist of only two items: 1.) Full disclosure of contributors and amounts. 2.) Much, much, smaller government with, of course, the associated tax decrease. With the government staying within Constitutional bounds, there will be less of a financial incentive to grease the system. The real winners in this entire debacle are incumbents (it will be even harder to challenge one) and the media (king-makers). I used to respect John McCain and gave him some slack for what he went through in Vietnam. No more!!!! By pushing for this, he has whored himself before the entire country.
