President Bush: Please Bring Ted Maher Home From Banana-Republic Monaco!

American Green Beret veteran and accomplished neonatal nurse Ted Maher has now been held 537 days without trial in Monaco's prison on trumped-up and false charges -- charges of causing the deaths of billionaire banker Edmond Safra and Ted's fellow nurse, Vivian Torrente on December 3, 1999. In truth, Ted fought valiantly against two armed, masked intruders to defend Edmond and Vivian and save their lives. During the struggle, Ted suffered severe knife wounds that required one hundred staples to close.

Billionaire banker Edmond Safra was cooperating with the FBI, who was investigating the IMF/Russian loans. Needing a convenient scapegoat for the murder of Safra, Monaco police subjected Ted to three days of grueling torture designed to extort a false confession from him. (see description in "BASIC TIMELINE" in Thread 1 - http://206.112.97.70/forum/a3ad8b097272d.htm ).

Monaco continues to hold Ted incommunicado, preventing him from sending or receiving mail. In fact, they restrict his communication with his family to one telephone call a week. This call is only allowed to last a few minutes and is always monitored closely to prevent any discussion of the case. Ted is forced by his jailers to take a psychotropic medication and is regularly "interrogated" by the Monaco judge -- Patricia Richet. Reports have been received that Judge Richet is a violent person who has displayed unstable behavior in the past. She allegedly has a history of assaulting a fellow judge, putting him in the hospital for a week. She also tears up letters from Ted's children in front of Ted rather than let him read them.

Hundreds of family, friends, work associates, parents of patients, and Army veterans who served with Ted have vouched for him as being a loyal husband, loving father, and an exemplary professional of great skill and compassion. Ted has also been defended by then-chairman of the House International Relations Committee Ben Gilman and Ted's congresswoman Sue Kelly, who have written Prince Rainier III of Monaco on Ted's behalf. Monaco has no evidence of any crime by Ted; they have no witnesses and no credible case against him. Even worse, Monaco has planted false evidence and suppressed vast amounts of exculpatory evidence -- even passing a special Monaco law that enables them to hold Ted four years without trial.

The Geneva prosecutor has said that Safra was killed for his cooperation with the FBI regarding the laundering through Safra's Republic National Bank of $4.8 billion in IMF loans to Russia.

Regardless of the reason "why," it is obvious that Ted Maher is a scapegoat for a murder by others. We are working to obtain his release and to correct the grave injustice being done to an American Green beret veteran and medical professional.

Ted's fellow soldiers have written Colin Powell to look after Ted's case.

DatelineNBC November 21, 2000, "Who Killed the Billionaire?" showed the Princess Grace Memorial tests exonerating Ted from the prosecutor's slander.

Called by an acquaintance "a ghastly old woman who bought her way into society," Lily Safra is in the spotlight as the murder of her husband, Edmund Safra, goes to trial.

November 17, 2002 -- A Briton of Russian extraction who grew up in Brazil, Lily Safra is known for her extravagance and her skill at social affiliations - which have earned her the nickname "The Gilded Lily." Two of Lily's four husbands met unfortunate ends. Her second husband - a Brazilian financier - died suddenly with two bullets in his chest. Cops called it a suicide. She inherited $230 million.

Her last husband, Edmund Safra, the billionaire chairman of Republic Bank, died in an alleged arson in his Mediterranean penthouse.

The couple were mainstays of New York society.

When Edmund died, Lily inherited billions and that renewed her feud with his brothers, Joseph and Moise, who had been disinherited.

The brothers never wanted Edmund to marry Lily and she barred them from his funeral in Geneva - which they crashed.

But Lily wasn't long out of the spotlight.

In July, she placed her two Fifth Avenue apartments on the market for $45 million and moved to London.

She now counts Britain's Prince Charles, his paramour Camilla Parker Bowles, Elton John and the Rothschilds among her friends.

On Thursday, when a Monaco judge slams the gavel starting her husband's murder trial, Lily will be starring in what promises to be Europe's trial of the century.

"It's going to be the O.J. Simpson trial of Europe, a total circus," said veteran attorney Michael Griffith, representing Ted Maher, 44, of Stormville, N.Y.

Maher, Edmund's former nurse, confessed to starting the blaze in Edmund's fortress-like home so he could rescue Edmund and be a hero. Griffith blamed incompetent Monaco cops and firefighters for Safra's death.

And Maher's wife, Heidi, says the confession was coerced and newspapers have asked where the security-obsessed banker's Mossad-trained bodyguards were and whether or not he was killed for exposing a Russian Mafia money-laundering scheme.

The sensational trial is expected to attract not only scribes from around the world - including Dominick Dunne and Tina Brown - but society movers and shakers as well. Tickets in the 80-seat courtroom are in hot demand.

Some say the proceedings are not likely to reflect well on Lily.

"She's a ghastly old woman who bought her way into society," fumed famed socialite Taki. "And the view in our circle is that she did it. Or at least we wish she was the suspect."

He sniffed: "Lily gives a lot of money to charity and that opens doors for her.

"But people hold their nose when they take it. I've never heard of anyone as disliked as Lily Safra."

Under a quirk in the law, Lily and the brothers will have their own legal representation at the trial. Already, sources told The Post, fireworks have erupted between them.

"During a preliminary phase, they argued for about 20 minutes about basically who was a better Safra, and then it was, ‘Oh yeah, now we'll talk about Maher,' " one insider said.

"It's going to be a beauty show between Lily and the brothers."

"I don't think they're going to know what hit them," he said.

A court insider predicted lawyers for Safra's brothers will argue Maher had accomplices.

"They'll say he couldn't have done it alone," the source said. "And they'll ask why his Mossad-trained guards were gone, why there was no insurance claim and why he wasn't rescued."

Lily's second husband Alfredo "Freddy" Monteverde shot himself twice in the heart-- and left her (by my account) 210 million.

The lawyer for an American accused of killing financier Edmond Safra and a female nurse charged yesterday that it was the paranoid multibillionaire who murdered the nurse.

Michael Griffith told The Post that an autopsy report revealed Vivian Torrente - who died with Safra in a bizarre 1999 fire in Monaco - had blood in her thyroid, indicating she was likely strangled.

The report also showed that Torrente had Safra's blood on her bra, panties and nurse's cap, Griffith claimed.

The explosive allegation comes as nurse Ted Maher, 44, of Stormville, N.Y., goes on trial Thursday for the deaths of Safra and Torrente.

"We are prepared to prove at trial that Edmond Safra was responsible for the death of Vivian Torrente," Griffith said.

He said the autopsy made a number of startling findings, including:

* Torrente had "combat-like" marks on her neck and blood in her thyroid, indicating a fight.

* She had bruises on her knees.

* Safra's DNA was under her fingernails, and Torrente's DNA was under his nails.

Maher has been accused of starting the fatal fire so he could be a hero and rescue Safra.

"We believe Ted is guilty of involuntary manslaughter," said Griffith. "He wanted to ingratiate himself with Mr. Safra. He didn't want to hurt him."

Griffith said Safra, 67 - who had become increasingly paranoid about his safety - had been told by Maher that armed intruders had broken into his mansion. Maher then reportedly stabbed himself to make it look like he battled the imaginary thugs.

Police say Maher set the fire in a bathroom wastebasket in Safra's penthouse suite. But the lawyer believes that rather than die from smoke inhalation in the bathroom, Torrente made an effort to flee.

"We believe she said to herself, 'I'm outta here,' and tried to escape. But Edmond Safra was paranoid, and we think he grabbed her by the neck when she tried to leave the bathroom," Griffith said. "That's where you get the exchange of DNA."

Another article in the New York Post today about the Safra case. The autopsy on Mr. Safra states he was clean of blood and died of smoke. Where did this blood from Mr. Safra come from? Could it be that the original story that Ted told is true? Were there other people there? The spattering of blood was on a wide area of Mrs. Torrente so wouldn't that mean possibly that Mr. Safra was shot in the famous chair (that has disappeared)and the blood spattered on Mrs. Torrente who was already killed and was laying on the floor in back of the chair? We inquiring minds would like to know the answer to this. MONACO, IT IS GETTING TO LOOK LIKE YOU HAVE SOME EXPLAINING TO DO ABOUT THIS CASE.

The *truth* seems to be oozing outa everywhere.
I've a notion it'll take a hellovalot more than a Dutchboy's finger or billionaire murderess' bank account to hold that truth back, too.

That much is painfully obvious to everyone *except* the sweet, "Gilded Lily" and her select group of paid imps & harpies.

As that truth seeps out into the light?
Monaco & what her representatives have done to Ted Maher & his family will be revealed for all to see and then Monaco's "trial" will only be but beginning.

Not to worry, there'll be some kind of restitution coming to Ted & his family for all they've been put through; in the end -- when all's been said & done.
