Former governor William F. Weld, one of the state's most popular political figures, yesterday declared his support for embattled Acting Governor Jane Swift, giving her a needed morale boost in the face of growing Republican enthusiasm for Mitt Romney.
In a statement the former Republican governor released to the Globe, Weld praised Swift for her tough and relentless campaign skills as a state senator, lieutenant governor, and governor.

Well, let's see...Weld got tricked out of office with a promise of being ambassador to Mexico by Clinton (didn't happen...he can't even speak Spanish and he's pro-abortion). So, Celucci, who had no authority over the legislature became Governor. He was elected to the post he inherited because Massachustetts voters seem to realize that gridlock is our best option, and that might happen if the governor is Republican and the legislature is Democrat. But then Celucci becomes ambassador to Canada and we get pathetic Jane Swift as acting Governor (no academy awards here, but it is her actual title). Now, Mitt Romney might have been a viable candidate and instead of taking this alternative, Weld, Brooke etal support Swift. These people don't have a clue that the Repbulicans in this state want a real Republican to run for office.
So, they'll trash Mitt Romney, just to save the remnants of the party for the out-of-touch, not-really-Republican "leadership". And the best we can hope for is the most fiscally conservative Democrat, or some third party Jesse Ventura type who can get a plurality of the vote.
Do they have any idea that the real Republicans in the state almost don't care what they do anymore? These idiots should drop Swift and embrace Romney, or someone else who might be electable.
Right now, I'd probably be more electable than Jane Swift because a nobody would be better than someone who has been such an embarrassment.
Even the Boston Globe editorialized to that point a year ago when it said that the problems in Jack Robinson's campaign for U.S. Senator showed that the Republicans are unable to "generate real competition for Democrats across the full range of political offices." The Globe opined that, "This may please Democrats, but it is not a healthy situation for the long-term interests of the public."
Since when has the Globe been concerned with the interests of the public? Or Republicans getting a fair shot for that matter?
Thank you God, for leading my family from the wasteland of New England to the Promised Land of Flyover Country.
Let me guess: depsite his supeficial conservative credentials, Romney is actually pro-abortion, pro-socialized health care, and anti-Boy Scouts for not being sufficiently tolerant and gay.
Aren't these positions that any viable political candidate in Massachussets is required to take?
This is what I expected. Massachussets politics is a black hole of extreme pro-gay, feminist, whack-job liberalism. Its infinite dark gravity will warp any soul that wanders into it.
Swift does not plan to resign, the adviser said.
In April, Swift became Massachusetts' first female chief executive, and, at 36, the nation's youngest, succeeding Paul Cellucci when he became ambassador to Canada.
Up until recently, she had said she was undaunted by a challenge from Romney, who has never held elected office.
Romney planned to announce his decision to run later Tuesday, after a meeting with supporters, according to a friend, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Yeah, but would your running mate be, how should I put this, light in the loafers to show your diversity? ;^)
Gotta keep rubbing that in, doncha?
Don't blame you one bit!!!!
My, my, Mitt.
Possible, I have to check this Reich. He cannot be worse than Weld/Cellucci/Swift crew.
She is citing "family" as her reason for quitting the race. What a load of trype.
She was a terrible leader without ANY real support from the republicans OR the people of the state. She has fired everyone who had any stones and replaced them with rubber stamp yes boys (note I did not say MEN, just look at who she chose as her running mate and you will get the picture).
Hopefully, Mit Romney can do for the state what he did for the Olympics = bring it in on budget and in the black. I also seriously doubt he will be picking a girley boy for his Lt. govenor.
That may take you out of the running before you even get started!
