NEA OKs Resolution to Protect Gays

WASHINGTON (AP) - The nation's largest teachers union will ask school districts to protect homosexual students and staff by adopting policies that punish harassment and discrimination.

Under a plan adopted Friday by the National Education Association's board of directors, schools also will be encouraged to develop factual materials for classroom discussions on homosexuality. All staff and students will be encouraged to speak up when they see or experience discrimination based on sexual orientation.

"I think it's a pretty clear signal that the organization recognizes there are some pretty serious needs for gay and lesbian children in school - and employees," said Penny Kotterman, president of the Arizona Education Association. She chairs the NEA's Task Force on Sexual Orientation, which was created last fall to develop the plan.

Kotterman, a middle school special education teacher in the Kyrene School District in suburban Phoenix, said the plan will help schools with difficult issues of student sexuality.

"Staff do need help," she said. "They need professional development, they need good, factual data that helps them deal with these issues."

The union said it could provide "accurate, objective and up-to-date information" on the needs and problems of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered students and staff.

A statement by the NEA said the information schools provide should be age-appropriate, nonjudgmental and relevant to subject matter being studied.

Studies indicate that homosexual students have higher dropout and suicide rates and sometimes are treated with hostility by fellow students. NEA President Bob Chase has said gay and lesbian teachers in some states face losing their jobs because of their sexual orientation.

"It is clear that, in too many places, students and education employees who are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered face a hostile environment," Chase said Friday in the statement.

A study last year by the University of North Carolina estimated that 5 percent to 6 percent of students 17 or younger, or more than 2 million students, are gay, lesbian or bisexual.

The NEA represents 2.6 million teachers and other school employees.

All students are already protected by law and by school policy. But if we're going to play the inference game, then I infer that since all students are protected, adding specific regulations protecting people based on sexual orientation is a way to slide institutional approval of said orientation in the back door.

Doesn't say anything in there about stoning a disrespectful son...in fact, the parable that Jesus teaches about the Prodigal Son is quite the opposite. But, in the New Testament, it does say that homosexuality is a perversion.

New Testament puts greater stress on repentence and forgiveness. The Prodigal Son repents and is forgiven. If a sexual transgressor like adulterer, homosexual or else truly repents he should be forgiven as well.

Absolutely. Unfortunately, I don't think factual material such as the extremely high risk of AIDS from homosexuality will be taught. The NEA "factual" material that will be taught is everyone is partially gay and its all genetics and gay is good.

I don't know about you, but I've had enough of seeing everybody's personal sexual laundry being hung out to dry when the majority of Americans are having a hard enough time putting food on the table and paying our taxes.

Some people have too much time and clearly do not have families to support. Instead they indulge in the sexual experimentations with other people kids.

Secondly, even if a person chooses to be open about who they are, does not justify ill treatment of that individual, people are people, they have a right to be safe.

I agree with you. I'm not at all interested in persectuting or harrassing homosexuals. What goes on in another person's bedroom is none of my business.

It's when the line is crossed and such perversion is openly inflicted upon others that I feel the need to interdict.

The issue in school is not whether or not a suspected minority is being persecuted. The issue is that the normal majority is being subjected to bizzare and perverese behavior and the NEA wants to promote such as being "OK".

This just isn't the case. I'm simply astounded that people have been frightened into silence over the propagation of mass pervesion.

Homosexuality is a severe and disturbing disorder which is typically derived from some psychological trauma so devastating that the individual can longer recognize their own sex despite the obvious evidence that God has placed in front of them.

There has never been any viable evidence to prove contrary to this fact.

The shocking nature of homosexuality is not only offensive to the savy, stable psyche, it is an affront to nature itself.

The decent into to homosexual lifestyle, the "Great Gay Lie" is a path sown with deception, depression, disease and paved with the misery of friends, family and loved ones. The corruption promoted by the militant homosexual lobby feeds this cycle of despair with the lives of our innocent loved ones.

Those afflicted with this life-destroying malady need to seek both psychological and if necessary medical help immediately.

Taking such into consideration, I believe it to be a criminal act to openly support public acts of homosexuality and inflict such behavior on those who find it intolerable.

Out of site, out of mind. The fact of the matter is that homosexuality is not normal, and if the minority chooses to subject our innocent children to such, the minority is going to find themselves in a very uncomfortable situation once the parents become involved.

Loving adults are simply not inclined to sacrifice their children to the likes of the militant homosexual lobby. <

The word "nonjudgemental" makes this whole thing unconstitutional. It infringes on our constitutional rights to have free exercise of our religion.
We do not want our children being taught, at taxpayers expense too, that it's ok to be gay.
In the free exercise of our faith we believe it is sinful and immoral.
The "judgement" has already been made.

Earlier this year, a poll was taken to determine progress made relative to gay, lesbian, bestiality, necrophilia, sadomasochism, bisexual and transgender issues. While the survey shows growing acceptance of equal rights for certain sexual orientations, many gay, lesbian, bestial, necrophile, sadomasochist, bisexual and transgender individuals still see discrimination. Bill Would Ban Discussion Of Gays

If you're gay, some state lawmakers don't want you to talk about it in class.

Discussions about homosexuality - even at gay-straight alliance meetings run by students - would be prohibited.

And school boards' hands would be tied, should a bill moving smoothly through the General Assembly win Senate approval.

House Bill 88 forces Virginia school boards to "develop policies prohibiting presentations, classroom discussions, school-sponsored assemblies and student meetings" that deal with sodomy and other "crimes against nature."

The bill passed Monday in the House by a vote of 83-16.

Now, local activists are gearing up for a fight as the bill heads to the Senate.

Patty Smith of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) of Richmond, said she's concerned the bill would curtail effective HIV and AIDS education.

Representatives of local gay organizations and the Virginia Education Association say the bill goes too far in limiting teachers and school boards.

Thanks for defending me Gramma. My feelings were hurt. Sniff.....NOT. I know my true colors, know who I am, etc. It doesn't bother me when people insult me on the computer. It only bothers me when people insult my friends and bring children or grandchildren in on the insult though. HEH!
