Ashcroft Faces Quandary Over Clinton Scandal Secrets

Sometime in the next three months Attorney General John Ashcroft is expected to decide whether to make public still-secret evidence in an array of Clinton-Gore scandals, including Whitewater, Filegate, Chinagate and the Monica Lewinsky imbroglio.

The evidence comes in the form of nearly 2 million recovered e-mails that Justice Department lawyers will review with attorneys for the former president and vice president.

In a Jan. 9 filing with U.S. District Court Judge Royce Lamberth, the Bush Justice Department revealed that Corbett Technologies of Alexandria, Va., had completed the process known as the "Tape Restoration Project."

"From 189 failed [e-mail] tapes, 53,149 unique e-mails were restored and added to the TRP. In total, the number of unique TRP e-mails is 1,844,242," the DOJ said.

Nearly half the 189 tapes, 71, were blank.

"White House whistle-blowers who have talked to people who have seen this e-mail believe it contains incriminating evidence," Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton told NewsMax.com Monday.

The e-mails cover critical periods in the late 1990s and were under subpoena by Congress and the independent counsel. Sources familiar with their contents have described them as potentially very damaging.

Judicial Watch first revealed the White House e-mail scandal in 1999, when then-Clinton administration computer expert Sheryl Hall told the legal watchdog group that critical e-mail evidence was being withheld.

After Hall's revelation, another White House computer expert testified he was told to keep quiet or there would be "a jail cell with your name on it."

The restored electronic files also cover illicit Commerce Department trade missions in which tickets allegedly were sold to corporate donors to the Democratic National Committee, and may even contain evidence on Enrongate.

One odd coincidence: Attorney Earl Silbert, who now represents Enron CEO Ken Lay, also represented Clinton Chinagate kingpin James Riady as well as Northrop-Grumman, one of the independent contractors hired by the Clinton White House to help with e-mail retrieval.

"Now the question is will the Department of Justice under Ashcroft divulge what they find?" Fitton said.

A recent Bush executive order shielding materials of past administrations from discovery could be invoked in this case, he warned.

Ashcroft is just another Reno and will cover the big brasses butts, just like Reno did for Clintons.

"...since 20 January, I have to conclude Bush is unnaturally frightened of the Clintons. He is scared out of his wits about something or several things."

Doesn't matter who is scared and chewin nails - just sit back and relax everyone; when the following case goes to depositions - the s*** will hit the fan - and all involved will...

Think a thousand or so raw FBI files might have anything to do with this continued obstruction of justice, nahhh.

The FBI files excuse is a worn and weak explanation for deeper failings by various people. Can we have actually elected so many bad people with bad things in their files? If so, what does that say about you and me, who voted for them?

No, the FBI files excuse is too easy, too convenient an explanation, invoked whenever somebody cannot or will not consider more basic reasons for actions or inactions.

"I agree with you, but can't figure out why Bush seems so spooked."

Could be that when all the details of the Clinton-Gore Chinagate Treason Scandal are disclosed ....
it'll scare the hell out of the whole damn world. Thanks delusional Democrats!

Since this is evidence in a pre-existing legal matter - I'd think that anything pertinent to that case would be excluded from the Executive Order.

If not, there will surely be a storm of media releases over the failure to provide under the then governing regulations.

Also have to comment on the rise in Bush-bashing on FR.
You guys are so upset that clinton is no longer around - is it because:
(a)You're working on Gore or Hill for the next time around, or
(b)You just got into the habit of trashing in general?

Fact of the matter is that governments lie, clinton did it a whole lot but all governments lie. Once a lie has been told and maintained NO following administration wants to let it out because of:
(a)The damage it would do to public trust in all administrations, and
(b)the liklihood that subsequent policy has been built, at least in part, on top of the falsehood
- do you actually think we will ever admit that all that genocide against albanian muslims was a sham?
- do you expect someone to rise in congress tomorrow and declare Mugabe to be a monster worthy of another massive military operation?

What you are saying then is that we are finished, absolutely finished as a republic. If Klinton isn't exposed, the next one to come along will only be ten times worse, and don't kid yourself, they can be ten times worse than Klinton. Just think about Hillarious Klinton.

Forget the diaper heads, the real enemy in in DC.

I am concerned about the fully blank ( 71 in all ) tapes. I cannot help but wonder if the retrival company, since the article points out that Enron Lay's attorney, Silbert, also represented RIADY and Northup-Grumman<-----one of the companies assigned to do this massive retrival task. SO I wonder about the blank SEVENTY ONE TAPES.

Thanks for the links and the pings.

It is imperative that wrong doing be held to the light and examined. Politicians that claim such action will harm the country have something else that they are afraid of. Truth can never harm a nation, only make it stronger. Which is yet another thing these politicians may fear.

I had toyed with the idea of indexing this to the clintonscandals... the darn list is so long it's getting unwieldy.

I'm really not convinced there is a fear factor or mutual guilt holding back the Bush Administration. Some other poster made a very salient point a while back, that no sitting administration had ever approved of looking back for wrongdoings by its predecessors. It may be that simple.

Re: clintoon. Maybe all those files that hitler clintoon has are actually bill's? LOL!

I sure want to think that Bush is a decent human being myself. I may be naive and all that, but the Bush that I see is not the same one that the Bush bashers here on FR portray.

I am hoping that when all is said and done that the information is pried away into the sunshine and clintoon is revealed for all the things he did, and that there is nothing on George Bush. . .

I pray that finally Ashcroft or someone looks into this and goes after those scum clintons. This could keep Hildabeast out of the White House, which would be a good incentive for Ashcroft!
