December 3, 2001 -- WASHINGTON - U.S. troops are entering a "dirty" phase of the war and should expect casualties as they butt heads with the Taliban's last fanatic foreign fighters, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld warned yesterday.

Rumsfeld said Chinese, Pakistani and Chechen mercenaries who are aiding the Taliban are deadly and determined fighters.
