How in the world did that man down in FL ingest enough of it to die from inhalation anthrax then?

Actually, we do. They just needed a vehicle to deliver it. The UN found tons of this stuff in Iraq before they were booted out. Has it gone anywhere? Maybe, maybe not.

They found anthrax, but not the high quality stuff they would need to make a weapon of mass destruction. They found the type of stuff you could mail to people and cause a panic. It can also be fatal that way, but not on grand scales.

A nuclear weapon would provide more than 10,000 times the necessary heat to render it useless, but we can't be too careful.

My favorite waste of tax payer dollars was when Big Bro made us protect ourselves in our cars with seat belts, and on motorcycles with helmets. I'm all for the common sense of these items, but forcing people to do anything, with the sole impact on their own selves, is NOT what this country is about. I'm so glad my hard-earned tax money is spent so wisely.

WAS ONE OF THE TERRORIST SICK WITH ANTHRAX?

If there was credible evidence of this, don't you think our govt. would be analyzing swabs from all the locations where the terrorists recently lived?

If spores were found, that would suggest that one or more were probably sick before the attack, PLUS it could provide a DNA connection between O.B.L and anthrax attacks elsewhere.

so if we aren't aware of the delivery system then we have to wait until people start walking around not feeling good. gee that makes me feel better. The most paranoid people are right now are in the media and govt. Perhaps they should start taking random anthrax tests of regular populus with cold symptoms? Just to rule out say a wide spread airborne attack. At least in the areas it's been discovered thus far.

BTW have we declared War yet? I keep seeing many posters say were are at war. Did congress do this yet or are we still working under the WPA?

All it takes it one letter to places where the majority of the population go. I won't give any suggestions. Loose lips...

You're proposing to self-treat yourself or your family if you think you might have anthrax? What you're suggesting is not only dangerous, it may be deadly--not only for you, but for others as well who might truly need it. If we all started stockpiling antibiotics, esp. the multi-spectrum, strong ones like Cipro, there would be none left for those who would really need them--like when flu season hits in a few weeks. And if you take an antibiotic like Cipro on a whim, then if you really got sick and needed it, it might be ineffective for you. Think of the implications of what you're suggesting. It plays into the worst fears and selfishness of the citizenry.

The implicatios that you miss is the right of the people to look to their own self-defense. The zero-sum arguement is nihilistic -- the law of supply and demand is already working. Bayer pharmaceuticals is gearing up to produce huge quantities of Cipro and the several other antibiotics successful against anthrax.

If I suspect I have been infected, I would take an antibiotic until the tests came back (two days?), and then stop or continue. This program does nothing to affect resistance.

This is not a "whim". It is a sensible precaution that I can do for myself and incidentally relieve the burden on official health professionals. I would not "stockpile" (I hear the pejorative word, hoard), just enough for the ten days needed.

Contrary to your final statement, I think self medication is the essence of self determination and independence and not wasting the time and resources of the health industry is the best way to serve my fellow citizen.

You imply we are panicky and selfish as a people. Universal examples now exist that prove the reverse. Passengers on hijacked planes do not lose their heads; inhabitants of burning, crumbling buildings do not trample each other to get to the exit. And, gun owners do not go around shooting at everything in sight.

There is a parallel with gun control in your arguement . And your solution would be to ration Cipro and distribute it to those who qualify for it. Control, delay, discrimination.

Fie on you.

No. Just like in Iraq, there was no war declared by Congress, the only body authorized to make the declaration. It's gonna take another big "something" from these folks, or, IMHO, from a third party who has been just waiting for us to be busy with a crisis, to kill a few million of us.

Then, those left in Congress may decide to forgoe the peace activists and kill some sand people. Until then, no.

What worries me, is that it is the start of the Flu season, and we might not know the difference. They don't give antibiotics for the flu...sigh.

Get a Flu shot, I've already had all of my family vacinated, even the children. That will eliminate one possible problem.

Secondly, Iraq does not possess the highly specialized equipment necessary to disperse anthrax effectively

Just curious. How do you know this? Are you a former UN weapons inspector in Iraq? And if you were, who is to say that Iraq has not gotten assistance from a few Russian scientists in recent years?

No. My point is that, under normal circumstances, you would not have even been aware that these people had been in contact with the bacteria. They were only detected because we were looking for individuals who had been exposed because of a previously known site of contamination. Furthermore, it tells you that of the many who are exposed, a small minority become ill. That is an important point to make, in this hysterical atmosphere.

Terrorists love people like you. For the price of a stamp and an envelope they can cause chaos. There's no need for widespread dispersal of the disease. One death and people are crawling under their beds.

IT IS NOW TIME TO PRAY FOR INNOCENT VICTIMS FIRST AND THEN UNLOAD OUR FULL ARSENAL ON THESE COUNTRIES (and we know who they are) INCLUDING NUCLEAR WEAPONS. IF WE DON'T, THEN WE WILL OBVIOUSLY SEE MORE AND MORE ATTEMPTS ON AMERICAN LIVES. IF YOU AGREE JUST POST A "GOD BLESS AMERICA, GOD HAVE MERCY ON OUR ENEMY" JM

You cannot assume what you don't know and expect logic to follow. You are hypothesizing. No conclusions can be drawn from guesses such as this.

Only if we knew people HAD INDEED been exposed to the physical threat of anthrax would your logic be correct. However, to assume that a body of folks were exposed merely by their proximity, or precautionary testing, does not work.

Why is not the mail stopped?

I doubt the postal service will close for any long duration The Army National Guard has approximately 361,000 soldiers in service across the 54 states and territories. I think aprox. 29 - 30,000? have been called up.

I noticed a young soldier in uniform at the local convenient/stop'n get it store a few days ago. I didn't think much about it but today my wife mentioned seeing a couple young military dudes at the same store, sitting at one of the booths. In the future I want to strike up some consversation with these guys. One never sees soldiers out here in this rural area.

If anthrax cases continue to pop up like mushrooms in the spring, (via letter bombs) perhaps we will be seeing these boys checking our papers and I.D.'s at the post offices and elsewhere across the country.

Yes, it can happen here.

He didn't "ingest" anything. He inhaled it if he died from inhalation anthrax. You habe to inhale 10,000 or so spores. These are pretty small spores so 10,000 should not be too hard, I would guess. But I am no expert.
