DUBAI, Sept 29 (Reuters ) - Qatar's al-Jazeera television said on Saturday Afghan security forces had arrested five people, including three Americans, near the border with Iran with maps of sites of Osama bin Laden's group.
It said a military source from bin Laden's al Qaeda group telephoned its correspondent in Islamabad and said the three Americans were from the U.S. Special Forces and had modern weapons and some maps of al Qaeda sites.
"The five were arrested, three Americans and two Afghans, who were trained in the U.S. Special Forces and have U.S. citizenship. The three Americans are also from the U.S. Special Forces," the correspondent quoted the source, who he said usually called journalists, as saying.
"They had some modern weapons and some maps of al Qaeda sites," the source was quoted as saying. "They were on a reconnassiance mission to know the territory of al Qaeda".
He said pictures of the men would be released soon. ((Gulf newsroom, +971 4 391 8301, fax +971 4 391 8335, dubai.newsroom@reuters.com))

If this is all true, the bad guys now have some of our weapons. By the way.. I just saw the short blurb on one of the running ribbons on FOX

IF THIS IS TRUE...
May God Keep and Protect and Bless All Of Our Heroes.
To: JohnHuang2
Given the timing I'm skeptical.

Shit, never mind. Of course they are
To: JohnHuang2

I suspect that they were totally winded, huffing and puffing up a trail at high elevation carrying heavy loads and walked straight into an enemy ambush, checkpoint, or merely an encampment.
It takes even fit troops weeks to acclimate to humping a ruck up the high mountains. Rushing this kind of job is bound to lead to this.
God have mercy on them...and pray the Taliban is in a bargaining mood.

If this is true so much for not hurting innocent people!! Let's go get them!!
To: JohnHuang2
I can't help being suspicious of this one. The details are strange. I suppose all we can do is not let this get under our skins too much and wait for further information. If it turns out to be true, it's sad but... we were told of the risks and we have to keep with current operations. :(

"modern weapons"?
What, those ignorant people have never seen a walkie talkie and some rifles? Gimmie a break, its not like they had lasers or anything!
To: piasa
"Modern weapons" to the taliban would be sat radios, GPS, laser designators and other high tech gear the Talibans had never seen before.

For the record, regarding this story, I was initially given the heads up via freepmail by another freeper.
To: JohnHuang2
I agree. Let's remember the "Taliban shoots down a plane" disinfo. I'll wait and see.
To: JohnHuang2
Like you, John, I'm hoping this is a false story. I checked the Reuters links off of Drudge, as well as most of the other news links there, including the Islamic and Paki links, and the only place I found the story was on Ananova. Whether it's being suppressed, or withheld pending authentication...don't know. Haven't seen anything on Fox or MSNBC (they're showing 24 Hours at Ground Zero right now, very intense). I'm heading to bed now (maybe I can get some decent sleep), and I'm going to keep our military in our prayers.

I may be proven wrong, but the only evidence we have that they have our boys is
their claim.
I don't put much stock in their word. And I hope like hell I'm right.

If this story is true, I pray for these men, their families, and for President Bush.
God bless America!

That is exactly why they shouldn't have allowed themselves be captured. In that situation, you fight until they kill you.
To: kayak
kayak, I hope and pray it's just enemy propaganda.....I'm really skeptical, considering the source...
