Barney Frank says WE CAN WAIT ANOTHER WEEK SO THEY CAN "WORK AS A COMMITTEE" TO CRAFT AN ANTI-TERRORIST BILL THAT ALL CAN LIVE WITH. CONCERNED ABOUT "RELEASE OF INFORMATION" being inappropriately disclosed. Probably worried about his own "exposures".

Find the 'one year period only' clause in this legislation!
Thanks! (because we KNOW these guys would NEVER LIE to us...)

Sorry, boy did I step on it that time!
Many of these self-proclaimed libertarians have made the argument that no new laws were needed because Ashcroft is making such good progress.
That burns me up as much as their criticism of a bill that, apparently, none of them have read.
My bad, as they say. :-(

"The law needs to be changed now that they can tap a particular person not just their landline phone."
I don't know what you mean by "tap a person." How do you "tap a person," as opposed to a phone line? The law as it currently exists allows the government to obtain a court order to tap ANY phone -- mobile, landline, etc. -- that an individual owns or uses based on a showing of probable cause that that person is committing a crime. The laws with respect to aliens (non-citizens) or alleged terrorrists are even looser.
So, what's the problem? What power does government allege that it does not have that it needs and which would have potentially prevented the events of Sept. 11? Does it bother you even the slightest that the new powers the government wants would without doubt be declared unconstitutional by our very fine Supreme Court, led by Justices Scalia and Thomas?
I mean no disrepect, but I think that you need to go back to the basics (starting with the Constitution) and reacquaint yourself with what makes this country worth fighting and dying for. Security is not the issue. Liberty is.
The terrorrists can kill ten times, a thousand times, the number of people who died on Sept. 11 and WE WILL NOT trade our constitution or the freedoms which it protects for a small measure of temporary and elusive security.
I know that you and many other people mean well, but this enthusiatic embrace of the voluntary relinquishment of our precious freedoms is accomplishing the goals of the terrorists far better than they have done or could ever hope to do. Doesn't that bother you in the slightest?

Probably worried about his own "exposures". You got THAT right! People just don't seem to get it! The President and the AG do not want to take any citizens rights away from them. They are trying to protect our rights. These people are allowing themselves to be duped into the mis-information campaign being waged by the terrorists and the libs.

Most of this law is great, but some of the
FBI/DEA/ATF fanatics with an agenda have also snuck their own little projects in.
Terrorism is Federal, why are State's Attorney Generals being given the same access in this law?
These guys are all publicity seeking monstrocities. If Garry Condidit had been a lawyer, he would have become a State Attorney General.

"as it currently exists allows the government to obtain a court order to tap ANY phone " And every time the person travels to another jurisdiction they have to stop until they get another court order.
The bill will allow them to get one national court order.

The problem is that they have to identify a phone number in connection with the tap. What's not to understand. I've typed search warrants have you? They're dreadful. I think Ashcroft has a great idea. Its easy to buy a phone now days, I almost bought one at my local grocery store.

The proposals are reasonable and don't infringe on our rights. They infringe on the rights of terrorists trying to come into our country and use our own infrastructure against us once they are here. There has been a liberal mis-information campaign going on for days now.

Let's go after terrorists, not the American people!!Could you provide details on how one does this?

You know, you'd think when people find themselves defending the likes of Barney Frank and John Conyers, they'd stop to ask themselves what might really be going on here.
To: KeepTheEdge
The Constitution protects CITIZENS! Not NON-CITIZENS! You people need to study up on what you're talking about before you go spouting this stuff. There is nothing there that takes any Constitutional rights away from any citizens.

Oh, and I suppose that IF the terrorists decide to cross the huge unprotected borders, and come here to attack us, they'll be stopping at the local Radio Shack to buy a cell phone first?
This is not the answer, and by the way, they are not just asking for a change in the wire tap laws.
Why do they not question the Airlines for hiring people at minimum wage to scan luggage and bags?
Why do they not place a tail on Foreigners, period?
This is ridiculous.
Including the insistance that these draconian measures be passed quickly.
