Neil Young sings IMAGINE at Hollywood show for victims
Fox News | 9-21-01 | None

This morning on Fox News, they ended a segment with a clip of Neil Young, in his old cowboy hat, singing IMAGINE. This was at last nite's show in Hollywood to presumably benefit the families of the victims of the act of war in New York.

"Now I don't want to offend or anything, and I don't mean this sarcastically, but are you serious when you say you don't see a connection between Lennon's song and communism????"

Nope, absolutely not. What are wars, crime, and fights in the world most often fought over? Religion, and possessions. The song is just saying "imagine" if these didn't exist, the world would most likely be a peaceful world. I am not saying we should get rid of them, (OF COURSE NOT) and he didn't either. It is just saying "IMAGINE" if they didn't exist there would be peace. Imagine is the main keyword in the song!

I guess we could pick apart just about any song lyrics and interpret them the way we see fit.

This song expresses a valid point of view. Look at all the world's trouble spots. _Every_ damn one involves religion. Yugoslavia was a peaceful, rather prosperous and somewhat "loose" Eastern European country at one time...

He's not, and never has been, a singer. He's a thin nasal whiner who can't get over himself.
once again proving the musical point: the right wing position was invented for those with no soul; gives them comfort to band together in their inability to understand some things which lie beneath the surface.

not a singer? you need to learn to listen between the lines. doesn't mean you have to like him.

"The song is "Imagine", and it's about peace. Lennon was against war and was for peace in the world, which I see nothing wrong with. It also says "imagine all the people living in peace". Learn how to read lyrics."

Look, I've had about enough of you defending this offensive garbage.YOU need to read ALL of the lyrics of this song, not just pick and choose a few lines that are nice sentiments. What you are doing is akin to rummaging through a dumpster and eating a discarded doughnut because it looked OK, completely disregarding the dead rat and used diapers.

By your reasoning one could write a song to say "Imagine there are no minorities" since an absence of minorities would end racial conflict. Does that make it less offensive for your, or my, ears?

Imagine is the main keyword in the song!

And while you sit there at your comfy keyboard imagining whirled peas our men are going out to defend your right to imagine any foolish thing you want. Imagine this, rock.

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today

Marx supported the subordination of religion to the state. Socialists do not need to save or work for the future, and only 'live for today'.

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace

Marxists today are against nationalism, and support a one-world government. "Nothing to kill or die for" would imply that there is nothing worth defending or preserving for the individual, as everything belogs to the state, and they are the super-nanny. Once again, encouraging 'no religion'.

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

One of the MANY major criticisms of the Socialist is that they are dreaming if they think that Socialism will work THIS TIME, and has never been given a fair chance to succeed. Once again, 'living as one' implies a one-world governemnt. Notice he never sings "no government".

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world

No private property rights, destroying most of the rule of American law. 'No greed', of course bashing conservatives and capitalism. No hunger, even though that has never been accomplished, even in this most wealthy nation ever... and certainly isn't missing in Russia's bread lines. "Brotherhood of man" is another call for uniting under one ruling body for the whole planet. 'Sharing all the world' again eliminated property rights, individual rights, and sovreignty.

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one

Dreamer refrain. Begging for converts, as the only way it will happen in America is through the vote. "World will live as one..." One WHAT, rocker?

Is that enough analysis for you? Or do you need Mr. Lennon himself to come back from the grave and tell you your interpretation is not the intent of the song. I'm glad you like it ("Yesterday" is my all-time fave), but it was uncalled for during a show supporting AMERICAN ideals.

"The peace was broken when terrorists attacked the US.Go pick some flowers hippie boy"

Nice to see you resorting to insults ( at least it seems like a very poor attempt at that) for my differing interpretation of the song. Way to go! Also, nice generalization attempt, but you failed. I'm far from being a hippy! LMAO!

The song is stupid. I would say that if it was written by a conservative. The only reason that it has gained the popularity that it has is that pseudo-intellectual people will latch onto any insipid cliche that will either make them sound intelligent or will fool themselves into thinking they were part of the sixties when they had nothing to do with that crummy decade.

Neil Young is not a bad guy. He's the father of a severely handicapped child. You don't hear that about him. I feel bad for him. So what about what he sang on the telethon. As far as my opinion on the telethon. I think it definitely had every "star" possible. I believe the ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY is only looking out for itself. They are losing money...several New York plays had to close down because of non-attendence. And with the cheap crap the ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY calls art...I bet their rulers are afraid of being put out of business by a sickened public. This is a way to get free publicity...to show they care, etc. Most of them aren't bad people...just very ambitious people. I think it was a bad idea to let United Way get the proceeds, United Way will abscound the proceeds and call the theft, ADMINISTRATIVE COSTS...it's sad to say but that organization has a track record... O'Reilly had it right...over a billion dollars will be collected for the victims and their families, let us see how much the victims and their families actually get...I bet not much...we live in a greedy world and some "do-gooders" are willing to steal whenever they have the opportunity. This is a ripe opportunity...

Here's a few other observations:

1) "Bridge Over Troubled Water" needs to sung with two people, not solo. What, is the bitterness between Simon and Garfunkel so bad that Art wouldn't show.

2) Celine Dion has the most beautiful voice in the world. Hope her rendition of God Bless America is available commercially.

3) If you have a number of actors and musicians clamoring for an event like this, why on God's green earth would you have Willie Nelson sing the finale by himself. Couldn't afford enough microphones for the others?

4) And note to Chris Rock - if you're not going to sing, don't just sit there like a jackass staring at the camera. Move offstage, for crying out loud.

5) As much as I admire Clint Eastwood, there is nobody on the planet who can deliver a "We're coming for you" speech better than Charlton Heston. It also doesn't help if Eastwood was wearing a button-up sweater worn like he came out of a nursing home.

6) Have you ever seen a more forced display of false emotion (aside from a Clinton) than from Julia Roberts. Nice "move the camera closer to see if she'll start to cry" shot.

7) Why do lesbian musicians want to play with old musicians? First k.d. lang and Roy Orbison, not Etheridge and b.b. king.

8) Billy Joel rocks.

9) Hey Tom Petty, Grizzly Adams called and he wants his beard back.

All in all, a pretty lame effort. But then again, what else could we expect from a bunch of entertainment lefties who wouldn't know true patriotism if it bit them in the ass.

Yes, there it is in plain English. An atheist anthem: not clever/witty-atheist (say, in the Shaw or Bierce vein), but global-village idiot atheist. And the instruments plod along from a treacle well.
