A stunning medical case is raising new questions about what may still be possible for patients suffering from advanced Alzheimer’s disease.
A Japanese-American woman in her 80s who had spent five years barely speaking, unable to walk on her own, and incontinent of urine started talking about her own life again roughly 19 hours after a single oral dose of psilocybin-containing mushrooms, according to a case report published May 28, 2026, in Frontiers in Neuroscience.
The paper, “Transient multidomain functional improvement in advanced Alzheimer’s disease following high-dose psilocybin-containing mushroom administration,” was written by Marcos Lago, Mariana Cerveira, and Joe Xavier Simonet of the Associação Cruz de Ankh in São Paulo, Brazil. It is one patient. It is not a randomized trial. The authors are explicit that the findings “do not imply disease reversal.”
The patient had a clinically diagnosed 10-year history of Alzheimer’s disease, including five years of marked hypofunction.
At baseline she spoke mostly in single syllables. She had chronic urinary incontinence, needed help to walk, could not dress herself, had a flat affect, trouble swallowing, and severe loss of spontaneous communication.
She lived under continuous family and caregiver supervision. Formal biomarker confirmation and advanced imaging were not available, and the authors note that a vascular or mixed contribution cannot be fully excluded.
With her son’s consent, she was given 5 grams of dried Enigma-strain Psilocybe cubensis by mouth. Importantly, that means 5 grams of mushrooms, not 5 grams of purified psilocybin.
The first stretch was rough. Clinicians suspected hyperthermia. She sweated heavily and dropped into a prolonged deep sleep-like state.
About 19 hours later, near 3:30 a.m., she woke on her own and began an autobiographical conversation that lasted roughly four hours. Her son reported memories and reflections nobody around her had heard her produce in years.

I know that a mushroom called Lion's Mane is alleged to improve memory loss, so maybe they are on to something here.
“So magic mushrooms might cure Alzheimer’s Disease.”
Don’t be so quick to make a conclusion...because, if Big Pharma cannot make billions off it it, it’s DOA.
This should liven up the parties at the senior centers.
Not exactly. The human brain doesn't heal but it can regain some functions by rewiring neural pathways and/or offloading lost functions to other regions of the brain.
It isn't so much as cure as it is a work-around.
Dude!
She went on to become cosmically aware, her hair fell out, and her eyes began glowing yellow. Her new preferred method of transportation is levitation. She now prefers to be referred to as “Madam Mushroom”, and all who refer to her otherwise are instantly disintegrated.
True statement.
Near the end of the article…“They frame it as residual function that may still be reachable under certain neuromodulatory conditions, not plaques dissolving, not a cure.”
I wonder if Musk’s team is working on Alzheimer in addition to sight and hearing.
Assuming this story is scientifically proven, I have a belief that natural remedies exist that can effectively treat many of the common medical conditions that exist today.
Things live Ivermectin, mushrooms, etc., are either natural or are very inexpensive, these solutions are buried by the pharmaceuticals industry.
I see you are a realist about the medical-pharma industrial complex.
A little off topic, but many cultures eat mushrooms, Poles, Lithuanians,Japs, etc....certain mushrooms have huge medicinal value.
I myself drink mushroom coffee every day, and when I miss just a day my body notices it. That said, there are many mushroom coffee blends out there, many taste like vomit.
What it is
A species of psychoactive mushroom containing psilocybin and psilocin (and smaller amounts of related tryptamines). These compounds act primarily as partial agonists at serotonin 5‑HT2A receptors.
Typical effects and timeline (oral ingestion)
-Onset: 20–60 minutes
-Peak: about 2–3 hours
-Total duration: roughly 4–6 hours (longer at higher amounts), with possible “afterglow” effects into the next day
-Psychological: intensified colors/sounds, altered time perception, enhanced introspection, euphoria; potential for anxiety, panic, confusion, paranoia, or distressing “bad trips”
-Physical: dilated pupils, increased heart rate and blood pressure, nausea/vomiting, tremor, sweating, dizziness, headache
Don’t be so quick to make a conclusion...

Concousions go round and round. At some
point it could provide some data/info worth
using. Take care

One of the things you notice after working with Alzheimer’s disease patients is that when the patient becomes angry or expresses intense emotion, their memory comes back and so does their speech.
I’ve heard them say more clearly in five minutes than they expressed in the preceding year combined, just by shifting their consciousness.
It has to do with amygdala consciousness processing vs hippocampal processing. The thalamus is responsible for focus and prioritizes which organ receives the signals.
This is one of the reasons that if you get an Alzheimer’s patient to sing, they often remember the words to the song when they don’t remember who you are, or their own name.
Singing shifts a person into an emotional consciousness.
When synthetics THC came out, like JWH-18 that was many times stronger than the plant based THC, first time users were developing schizophrenic attributes for the remainder of their life.
I worked with two different cases where young females used Ayahuasca and had similar psychological symptoms. The drug decreases ego which is masculine logical processing, shifting a person into emotional processing.
In these two cases, the young females had not self actuated and developed an ego identity. The Ayahuasca decreased what little ego identity they had developed and threw them back into an emotional consciousness, thus opening them up to hearing the schizophrenic voices.
My direct observation was the the drug increased activity in the right temporoparietal junction of the brain. The temporoparietal junction is an area of the brain where the temporal and parietal lobes meet, playing a major role in attention, language, and social processing.
To a lessor degree, the same attributes manifest when transcranial magnetic stimulation is used to stimulate the right temporoparietal junction of the brain.
Thus it would appear that drugs that decrease the hippocampal logical thought processing, the same aspect of consciousness that is dominant in Autism Spectrum and Asperger’s Syndrome disorders, blocks logical memory retrieval and forces a shift to emotional thought processing.
Maybe, this is why long term pot smokers lose their short term memory.
So where can a person buy this identical drug?
These “shrooms” are illegal in Canada but the law isn’t enforced and you can even get them delivered to your address. Neat huh? I know that this is a fact in Toronto at least. Take a trip to Canada...then “you can never leave the farm.”
Plus she gained the ability to fold Space and unlock racial memories
I have observed this same memory loss in people who go through a profound spiritual experience that diminishes their ego identity. I joke that it’s as though the unavailable memories are stored in the basement while they are living in the attic.
