Donald Trump is now 'very seriously' considering a diesel export ban as gas prices hit record highs – despite his top cabinet officials saying for months the move was off the table.
'The blunt tool of banning diesel exports definitely doesn't work,' Energy Secretary Chris Wright said at an event last week.
As the President's top energy official responsible for oil and gas production and the management of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, Wright has warned that the ban 'would put upward pressure on gasoline prices and jet fuel prices'.
He said in May that the ban was then 'absolutely' ruled out, while Interior Secretary Doug Burgum called the export curbs 'bad on all accounts' in the same month.
But when Trump was pressed on the ban on Sunday during a golf tournament in Illinois, he said that his administration is 'thinking about it very seriously'.
'That can oftentimes lead to a little bit of an increase on gasoline for cars, so we're looking at it very seriously. We may do it,' he added, noting the pain the policy could provoke at the pump.
A chorus of Republican lawmakers have spoken in unison against the possible ban, with some warning it would be a 'mistake' that could 'backfire badly.' The gambit has upset some MAGA donors in the oil industry, too, who've said the ban would only make a bad situation worse.
The U-turn comes as US diesel prices have hit record highs around $6.50, jumping nearly $3 compared to this time last year when a gallon cost $3.69, according to AAA.

This is a war time situation. Diesel is essential to truckers and heavy machinery, farming too. So I would ban diesel exports. The oil companies are making plenty of profits.

You are believing a lie. At most 1/3 of those cost increases are as a result of the increase in crude oil costs. More than 2/3 of the cost increase is combination of Newsom shutting down diesel refineries and Zelinskyy bombing Russian diesel refineries. Here’s all the data:

We've gasoline and diesel vehicles, and are happy to pay for their continued availability. Diesel, per gallon, is so much cheaper than "seasonal pumpkin spice swill." It's all a matter of perception.
We should limit not ban , there is a fixed split of what a refinery can make out of a barrel of crude depending on where it came from. Light sweet makes more gasoline while heavy sours make more diesel and virtually all the asphalt too.
Guess which our Gulf Coast refinery complex is set up to process. There is a reason we basically annexed VZ oil production they are the substitute for Arabian heavy which our Gulf Coast refinery complex is set up to process.
So WTI is exported and we import sour for the big boys refinery complex.
If we ban exports all together the spilt stays and we then have a glut of diesel vs the gasoline consumption we use. The storage tanks will fill in a couple weeks and then the refineries must ramp down production since you must make diesel when making gasoline if you don’t have a place for the diesel you stop making gasoline too.
This is exactly why gas prices will then skyrocket as shortages happen in the gasoline pool while diesel is in a glut market then.
We use 2.5 times as much gasoline vs diesel and the spilt per bbl is not a 2.5:1 split there is then a structural market issue.

We need to limit exports to surplus only while filling the in country diesel reserves to the brim this is the only way to stop the upwards local pressure.

US refineries produce SUBSTANTIALLY more diesel fuel than is consumed domestically. Just sayin’.

How much to allow out is a balancing act. If you cut off consumers of US diesel completely they will get it somewhere else - and might not come back when we start exporting again. So limit, yes, cut off, no.
E-85 just jumped up .20 cents. I’m now paying $2.19 per gal.

I agree limit diesel exports, not ban. In my youth diesel always cost less at the pump that gasoline. We should get back to this situation. Diesel production at refineries is easier/takes less work than gasoline production.
