100% hit rate: Chinese military’s rifle-wielding drone achieves flawless results in tests These types of drones could become a reliable supplement to ground forces, combining mobility and precision.

Researchers in China have revealed a new special-operations drone capable of firing a standard infantry assault rifle with perfect accuracy in controlled live-fire trials.

During the test, the weaponized drone hovered about 33 feet above the ground and engaged a target positioned 328 feet away. It fired 20 single shots, striking the mark every time. The target was a human-sized silhouette fitted with a 20-by-20-inch chest board, simulating the vital area of a standing person.

According to a peer-reviewed study published on December 9 in the Journal of Gun Launch and Control, the system achieved a 100% hit rate while operating in flight. The results highlight significant advances in precision, stabilization, and remote weapon control for future battlefield drones.

Of the 20 rounds that hit a human-sized target, 10 landed within about 4.3 inches of the center, roughly equivalent to a headshot. At a shorter distance of 164 feet, the system struck the target 19 out of 20 times. .

Before any live rounds were fired, the team ran extensive computer simulations to refine the control and targeting software. These digital trials dramatically improved performance, more than doubling the theoretical hit rate from just over 40% to nearly 100% under ideal conditions.

Wonderful, better killing tech by Communists. To chasten the USA for largely forsaking God, to bring repentance, though He will deal with China as well, in time.

Agreed. If it’s China it’s pure propaganda. After all that’s happened I’m very surprised people keep falling for this bilge.

"this system employed a standard rifle used by regular infantry soldiers. "

Sounds ridiculously unwieldy to me. A designed to order weapon would be more practical, more aerodynamic, and probably even cheaper in the long run than using a standard issue rifle.

Makes me think that this article is just propaganda, or maybe drone builders 'goofing around' just to see if they can do it.

And it would have to be a pretty large and powerful drone to not get knocked out of position by the recoil of a standard military round. I think if I was designing one I'd be using something like a 17HMR round, low recoil, but good penetration.

but will they be immune to pulsed EM-disrupting weapons? ... would be cool to see a whole army of these things collapse all at once ...

“328 feet away”

That’s pretty much a standard 100 yard shot.

This isn’t super duper marksmanship. I pretty much suck, and this thing can’t outdo me with computers?

“or maybe drone builders ‘goofing around’ just to see if they can do it.”

A study, not exactly goofing around.

A rifle attached to an existing drone via a modified mount.

Single shot only.

First explain how you plan to shoot while flying.

Who says so, China? I don’t believe anything China claims.

It's not any stretch of technology to do this in a controlled environment. It would be a bit expensive for the typical hobbyist budget, but you can build a machine like this out of commercial off-the-shelf components right now with a few good engineers.

The Chinese have lots of very good engineers.

These digital trials dramatically improved performance, more than doubling the theoretical hit rate from just over 40% to nearly 100% under ideal conditions.

And that is where the Chinese are exaggerating about what they did. Most likely, they had "ideal conditions" by using clearly marked and isolated targets with high-contrast borders and perfect afternoon lighting conditions. And they probably discarded sessions where they did not make their desired hit rates.

Calibration sessions after mounting a new rifle must be a really difficult task too.

Regardless of my skeptic nature, this kind of system improves with experimentation. What is impressive to me is that the Chinese-sponsored article reports that they did a lot of experimentation and are planning more. The Chinese teams do not usually work that way. It is out of character for them. They might be considerably more effective with their version 3 of this system.

For protecting a specific site from drones, why hasn’t anyone thought of ways to create turbulent air? They’re chasing after microwaves and other ways to disrupt the electronics, but there are always countermeasures to that. Create a lot of turbulent air, though, and small lightweight flying machines are going to be affected no matter what.

Powerful fans, air cannons, or even generating intense heat above a site would be very disruptive to a drone’s ability to fly accurately.
