Donald Trump is considering offering every Greenlander $1million – £750,000 – if they vote to join the United States.
The US President yesterday ruled out using force to seize the Arctic island and is instead focused on enticing the people to secede from Denmark.
If he made the vast payment to all 57,000 inhabitants of the strategically vital territory, the cost could hit £42.5billion.
While the plan sounds outlandish, the price tag is a fraction of the £595billion the US spends on defence each year.
It would also remove Greenland's reliance on Denmark for grants and reshape the island's economy.
The island would have to agree to hold a referendum and would likely need a decisive 60 per cent to vote in favour of joining America to receive the money.
Previously it was reported the White House was considering offering each Greenlander up to £75,000.
But Copenhagen has repeatedly said the mineral-rich island is not for sale and that any deal would require Danish assent.

$56 billion.
This kind of financial incentive to each citizen there will not happen. Trump knows that would stiff Americans. They’d be asking where is MY million dollars and they’d be right.
I say take it by force. We’re at war.
Where’s my $5000 check?
no borders! Colonizing company like Massachusetts Bay Company set 100,000 strong young MAGA couples up there, provision for 4 years; own house, land if they extend, demand plebiscite
I was first to propose this exact figure.
War? With who exactly are we at war with? Congress declare?
Daily Mail...Reader Beware...
Give them a percent of resources recovered, like Alaska residents. That’s a lifetime paycheck that doesn’t cost the taxpayer.
“$56 billion.”
But our despicable, do-nothing but spend Congress piles about $6 billion on the national debt EVERY DAY so it’s chump change to buy the largest island on the planet.
>>$56 billion
Cheaper then funding daycare in Minneapolis.
Seems Somalis get that and we get nothing in return but garbage.
This seems like a good time for me to announce that I am in fact Lars Erikson of Nuuk, Greenland.
While having your own homeland and wide open spaces is ‘priceless’ if one looks just at the minerals and land it might be worth 10 Trillion. If I owned 1/57000 of that I would not want to give it up for a paltry $1 million - though I would have to weigh that against the ability to not have it taken by China.
Not sure that would be legal
My only problem now is what to do with that $1,000,000. Maybe I’ll invest it in pet rocks. That fad is bound to come back.
56 Billion would be a steal. Alaska 2.0 only bigger.
What happens when you introduce $57 billion into an economy which has a GDP of $4.5 billion?
No.
