A federal jury has convicted a Steuben County man of economic espionage and stealing critical U.S. technology.
Ji Wang, 63 of Painted Post, N.Y., is convicted for stealing sensitive information on Fiber Laser research from Corning Incorporated, while working on a military defense project, and bringing that information to the Chinese Government with the intentions of starting a business.
Wang was born in China and immigrated to the United States in 1998 to work for Corning Incorporated. Between 2002 and 2007, Wang was assigned to work on a joint research project and development project funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and Corning. The goal of the 5-year, $11.4 million project was to develop optical fibers for high-powered lasers with military and commercial applications. DARPA sought to develop this technology to create laser weapons capable of shooting down drones and missiles.
According to the Department of Justice, around July 1, 2016, Wang stole hundreds of files that contained non-public data generated during the DARPA project, including trade-secret manufacturing technology that would have enabled him to re-create all manner of specialty optical fibers, including for fiber lasers.

I know. He sees the Chinese providing universities with nice ‘out-of-state’ money, perhaps to appease them after his cracking down on DEI.
I see 20% of incoming college students absorbing our expertise in cutting-edge technologies and giving it to our ideological enemy.

What students learn in class is pretty much public knowledge. I dont see a big problem with that. Take their money.
But controls need to be put in place. Students visa’s cant allow students to work, taking jobs from Americans or learning the proprietary knowledge our industries develop to maintain the tech advantage of our country. Likewise, they should not be able to do govt funded research as part of their studies on the many projects that universities get with government labs and agencies.
Some universities do great research and a lot of that is govt funded. Foreign students should not be able to participate in that for many reasons.

My thoughts are:
1) Trump was trolling HBCU's to get them to knee-jerkingly say that they don't want Chinese students (thus supporting our conservative position), or
2) Putting the Chinese at HBCU's doesn't give them access to the high security stuff we're concerned with anyway.
What AMERICAN students DON'T learn in class, because the seat was taken by a Chinese spy, is catastrophic.
I guess I should have said, students should have a fair playing field to compete for the best schools.
That said, I think most universities and colleges have the ability to grow based on the number of enrolled students. I agree American students should not be lower in a selection process than a foreign student. But What Trump said about colleges having to close if we disallowed all foreign students is true. The demand would not be enough to support the system.
I will follow that by saying that we do have a problem with the younger generation today. A lot, not all, but a lot, do not have the necessary prerequisite math and science background to enter college. That needs to be repaired.
I seriously doubt this was motivated by ideology or Chinese patriotism: just greed.
That's one of the biggest problems with immigration from low trust societies: no matter how talented, that talent comes with no moral core. You can see the same with the constant Medicare/Medicaid and EBT fraud from dotheads.
So why are we doing this? Because biggest scam are the executives with no moral core looking for the cheapest labor with no regard for the rest of society. Just cash in my stock options and bonuses, and eff the rest of America and the long term health of the company.

Here’s a thought. Maybe foreigners shouldn’t have access to our military secrets.
Where there is two or more of ccp mainland chinese gathered together there is theft and graft..........and lets not forget espionage.
It’s ingrained in their minds, their bodies, culturally, intellectually and by government decree.
To be absolutely frank it only takes one of them....
