The assailant in the mass stabbing that occurred in Britain earlier today has been identified as a 22 year old asylum seeker from Afghanistan who snuck into the country on a truck. He killed a man walking his dog and also stabbed a teen and another victim.

They're not much use for anything - brains have been bred right out of them. When my old Lab and I started in Novice Agility, there was an Irish Setter in the class that couldn't remember the course OR follow directions. A year or so went by, we were running in Masters, and that poor dog had yet to get a pass in Novice.

They also won't hunt any more. I judge hunting tests, and I had to fail the poor dog when he wouldn't go out after the birds, let alone pick them up . . . .

They do have beautiful coats, though.

Indeed they do. But breeding for one quality at the expense of everything else is a dead end street.

We are seeing it in Labs -- the show/conformation breeders are breeding what some call "Flabradors" or "Squatties" - very heavy set with short legs and jowly heads like mastiffs. And the hunting breeders are breeding tall, rangy, lightweight racehorses with narrow heads. Both are wrong (but at least the hunting bred ones can do something other than slow-trot panting around a ring).

Some Lab breeders are aiming for what they call "Dual Purpose Labs" - a dog that can win in the show ring and also hunt.

We used to have a Boston-terrier Pit Bull, who was wonderful with children, but utterly ruthless with other male dogs. Very smart and loyal. Beautiful, elaborate coat. Picked him up as a stray.
