Europe in the Balance?
American Greatness ^ | 28 Aug, 2025 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 08/28/2025 4:54:00 AM PDT by MtnClimber

Europe faces a breaking point as illegal migration, welfare strain, energy crises, and defense demands collide with shrinking populations and stagnant economies.

Almost weekly in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, France, and Germany, a sensational assault committed by an illegal migrant—often enjoying some sort of state support or with prior arrests for the same crime—surfaces.

Until recently, European politicians and the media sought to either ignore such news or accuse those who clamored for tighter borders, more police protection, and stiffer penalties of being “racists” or “xenophobes.”

Until recently, that is.

Mass protests are now common in Britain against the Labour Party’s open borders policies and generous welfare entitlements for immigrants who arrive illegally and without authentic “political refugee” status.

Greek officials, also swamped by illegal immigration, now cite President Trump’s secure border policies as new models for their own.

The majority of European immigrants now come from majority-Muslim countries in the Middle East and North Africa. Yet many arrivals seem angrier at their newfound liberal hosts than at the dictatorships they fled back home.

Europe’s immigration policies will not work in a multiethnic democracy.

Too many immigrants are arriving too quickly, without sufficient diversity, language fluency, skills, or familiarity with the customs and culture of their host nations. They often enter with separatist religious and cultural values antithetical to the very place they seek refuge.

Yet, there is no European plan of civic education to assimilate immigrants and teach them the rules, laws, and culture of their hosts.

It is then no surprise that what follows is ghettoization, resentment, and loud attacks on the very nation in which they seek sanctuary, denouncing it as decadent and godless.

In the past, Europe’s anemic military budgets, reliance on borrowed money, socialism, and a once-strong economy papered over these existential challenges

“ Too many immigrants are arriving too quickly, without sufficient diversity”

What does “without sufficient diversity” mean? The immigrants are MORE than “sufficiently diverse”, they are SO diverse, in fact, that they couldn’t GET any more diverse.

Having lived in 4 European countries and observed the Yurp Elites for several decades I can confidently answer. No. They cannot. They will never be willing to implement the real reforms needed nor will they ever willing give up on Gaia Worship, Global Socialism or multi-culti. They will forever hate their own people above all else.

Change will only come when the Yurp elites are driven from power - and they will use any means short of all-out war to hold onto power including open lawfare and corruption. We’ve already seen it. They will abuse any power or position of authority they are ever given. They’re as bad as the elites in the US only more powerful over there than the elites are in the US.

“without sufficient diversity., language fluency, skills, or familiarity with the customs and culture of their host nations.”

The singleness of purpose evil collective doesn’t seek any such nonsense. They have language, they cross all borders, they have culture. The collective will extinguish all others.

Ping! Out to the Victor Davis Hanson list

Donald Trump has declared that the 80-year postwar order is calcified and that the US will no longer run huge trading deficits with European Union nations. Instead, it will demand symmetrical tariffs, further challenging past European mercantile profitability.

An excellent, excellent article from Prof Hanson. Worth your time!

“Yet, there is no European plan of civic education to assimilate immigrants”

Why bring in people that you NEED to assimilate? If someone doesn’t already truly believe in the values of your country why let them in in the first place?

Multiculturalism is the stupidest and most suicidal idea a society could ever adopt!

Diversity is discord.

The old Europe we once knew is gone. It’s demise started even before the European Union came into being. I saw it first hand with the influx of Arabs in the south of France back in the late fifties and sixties. They never intended to assimilate into French culture. Europe in the not too distant future will be majority Arab. It is a lost continent.

IMHO, when Europe got away from God they got away from seeing their culture as worth preserving. Nihilism set in and it seemed okay to import a 3rd world rapefugee mindset.

Muslims do not want to assimilate. They will resist it with all their being. They are driven by their religion, with Shariah law as their goal.

I don’t see how any “plan of civic education ” is going to change that.

Agree, as someone who was a legal resident of Germany over decades and worked all across Europe, living long periods in other nations. "No. They cannot."

Hanson capsules it nicely -- "...their current crippling continental disease."

Europe, cradle to empires now dead ( think Belgian Congo to the many like it ), was cradle to two world wars along with Japan in one century.

The welfare state and the debt-ridden states are dying from their own internal contradictions. But the European ideologues and the corrupt atop many governments refuse to see this. Yet.

Europe is Europe because the People have refused to assimilate pretty much for ever.

France is France. Belgium is Belgium. Hungry is Hungry. Germany is Germany. Austria is Astria.

Various attempts by the above to assimilate have always failed

Was thinking the same thing. It’s hard to accept, but demographics are destiny, and the demographics of Europe aren’t what they were 50 years ago. The only way to correct the change would be a purge of the invaders, but the odds of that happening seem very, very remote.

What does “without sufficient diversity” mean?

I think he means that almost all of the immigrants are coming from Sharia law Muslim countries and too few from, say, Ireland, Russia, and Poland.

Yes, that’s what I think, too.

Still, there is one big question which I have: the loathing of the power elites for ordinary Germans might be the result of Nazism and World War Two…but don’t other European countries have this loathing of the power elites for their own countrymen , too? Maybe to a slightly lesser degree, but still harmful? Nations, like Britain, Netherlands, France, Switzerland, etc. which had no Nazism/fascism, and were either on the winning side in 1945 or had remained neutral in WW2?

Do you happen to have an idea why the situation is what it is? I definitely haven’t, there seems no logical explanation for this, in my humble opinion 🙁

The Turks will eventually rule over Europe. They are just European enough, and the Muslims will support them.
