As New Yorkers mourned the victims of a mass shooting last week in a midtown Manhattan office building, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, inserted himself into the discourse.
His comments concerned a photo taken Thursday of Gov. Kathy Hochul of New York, a Democrat, sitting on a folding chair inside a mosque, next to Mayor Eric Adams. To her left, men in kurtas and police uniforms kneel on a carpeted floor. Hochul wears a dark pantsuit, a somber expression and, on her head, a black scarf looped over her hair.
After an anonymous social media user posted the photo and asked — appending an expletive — why the governor was “wearing a hijab,” Cruz shared the post Friday and added, “Um, wut?”
The photo was taken at the funeral of Didarul Islam, a New York City police officer who was among those killed in the shooting last Monday at 345 Park Avenue. Islam, 36, who was awarded a posthumous promotion to detective, was Muslim, and his hourslong funeral was held at his mosque in the Bronx, with separate viewings for women and men. Before entering, women donned headscarves in accordance with Muslim religious tradition. Many men wore skullcaps.
Hochul responded sharply to Cruz’s post Saturday, saying that for her, wearing a head covering was a simple matter of honoring the fallen officer.
“Respecting a grieving family’s faith is ‘wut’ leaders and anyone with basic decency would do,” she wrote on the social platform X.

I guess that is a halfway step towards a burka.
‘“Respecting a grieving family’s faith is ‘wut’ leaders and anyone with basic decency would do,” she wrote on the social platform X.’
Basic decency is something she sorely lacks big time!
Raise your hand if you are sick of wh*re US politicians wearing scarves to mosques, yarmulkes to the Western Wall, kente cloth when some black leftist dies, etc....
It’s a sign of corruption and weakness of our nation.
This is dumb.
A woman covers her hair inside a mosque. She does the same if she visits the Pope. It’s just form.
It’s also a sign of decency and respect. In some cases (not necessarily a public official at a funeral, mind you), the bigger issue is whether the political figure should even be going to some of those places with their unique religious customs in the first place.
The ONLY time I wore a yarmulke was when I visited the western wall. It was an Isreali requirement, and I was in their country as a guest.
In this case, Hochul conformed to the expected custom inside the mosque. We can argue whether the custom is right, and we can argue whether Islam is acceptable, but paying heed to the customs of a place you are visiting doesn't mean you agree with them. It only means you are polite enough to accept them when visiting the other group's turf.
I despise Gov. Hochul, but I'll not badmouth her following custom when visiting the mosque.
We dressed respectfully when we visited the Vatican.
I have no problem with dressing respectfully.
What I am wondering is why the heck the family wanted her there??
Let's see her at a Pastafarian funeral with a colander on her head.
I don’t know; but it has nothing to do with wearing a headscarf.
Probably the least harmful of all religions...
How did they know Hochul was a woman? in a state that says anyone can be a woman...
Then she shouldn't visit a mosque, especially to make political capital out of a dead cop. And she shouldn't claim to be a woke feminist then either.
The damn has been breached. US Wh*re politicians are ready to make any and all "cultural accommodations" when a particular group becomes large or rich enough.
As I said - its a sign of national weakness.
Pandering to the muzzies as usual.
I’m with you on this one.
Really?

I guess if they were nuns...
What is the picture of, and where?
When a woman has an audience with the Pope, she wears a veil.
Hey, I just googled pope with women and get lots of pics. Your comment just made me curious, thats all. Not sure how you define ‘having an audience’ or how that relates to the officers funeral.
Second class respect.
That’s not a calendar. That’s one of them fancy lie detector attachments!
