Amazon suffers huge Prime Day sales plunge as families hang onto cash amid recession fears

Amazon gave Prime Day a surprise makeover — but American shoppers clung to their cash.

Momentum Commerce, a major online shopping firm, reported a 41 percent plunge in Amazon sales compared to the first day of last year's event.

The firm's sales slump comes after Amazon extended its usual two-day price-cutting blitz into a four-day extravaganza

Top bosses like CEO Andy Jassy and executive chairman Jeff Bezos bet that more time would mean more spending from inflation-weary shoppers.

But as the first day came and went, that calculation didn't seem to pay off — at least for one of Amazon's biggest sellers.

Momentum, which helps popular brands like Crocs and Therabody massagers sell on the platform, said it's still holding out hope that sales will pick up before the clock runs out.

'It all hinges on this four-day strategy being a success,' John Shea, the firm's top boss, told Bloomberg. 'Amazon sacrificed a lot on Day 1. It's a wildly unpredictable and uncertain year.

Amazon, for its part, pushed back on the downbeat numbers.

The company told DailyMail.com that Momentum's data doesn't reflect the broader success of Prime Day, noting the firm represents just 50 of the hundreds of thousands of sellers on the platform.

'We're pleased with customers' response to Prime Day so far and it is still early in the four-day event,' an Amazon spokesperson said.

Still, the firm's slow start comes at a time when American consumers continue to express worries about their personal finances.

Independent analysts told DailyMail.com that the weak Day 1 report may reflect a deeper issue: Americans' shaky confidence in the economy.

But it might be too...

Not too many good ones though.

The good ones are often available under the Criterion label. Expensive tho'. However, used record shops have proven to be a boon for old DVDs for folks wedded to old tech, like I am.

Remember, the only stream you own is the one coming out of your pee pee.

People are a bit turned off by Bezos lately.

Certainly have seen too much of his wife of late.

Sanchez is better than Bezos' ex-wife.

Sanchez is materialistic. And she's vain. She knows she's filthy rich.

Bezos' ex-wife is woke and is a supporter of the Democratic Party.

Amazon isn’t the only place selling Chinese crap. Every damn store is, including some Mom and Pop stores.

Mostly because we got out of the business of making things in America a long time ago. We are now paying the price.

We have pieces and parts still made in China and sent here to assemble in warehouses. Then people stamp a “made in America” sticker on it.

I don’t like Bezos but Amazon is a great concept for many.

I don’t usually participate in Prime Days. I did this year. Much more the I would have believed. I guess I am a contrarian from a “regular” ‘merican.

I see a line of mostly new cars when the state food bank truck rolls into town. I see it as a bunch of people with enough money to buy food just looking for a freebie like food-sampling at Costco. But the food bank doesn’t care. The more they give away, the more they can inflate their budget requests for next year.

These sales rarely offer anything I need.

I ended up buying some discounted security cams that had been on my list for a while, as well as a few majorly discounted apple airtags.

But in general i do not need any of the electronic toys and other junk that Amazon is pushing. And it sounds like everyone else is probably maxed out as well.

Hard to say what their situation is. But if money is tight then perhaps they need to hold on to that 15 year old Toyota Camry.

But there's no shame in buying a new car and then going to a food bank.

Back in the day, they'll get "government cheese".

I’ve been a Amazon Prime member for the past several years and have been monitoring and haven’t really seen any deals. I have been more cognizant of not buying items if they’re sourced from China. Gotten burned a couple times on China items.

I was looking for the old standard engine starter fluid. Aerosol. Ether.

Amazon had worthless listings. $10 or more.

Rural King had the cans for $ 2.50

Nonsense. Sales were down because they did not have compelling deals.

I think people are also learning you don’t have to buy through Amazon...You can go right to the retail store. The hook was the shipping. But most stores have free after a certain amount.

I had Amazon prime for several years. I’d only buy on prime days if something in my cart got reduced for prime day, but that rarely happened. I quit prime last November. You get free shipping if you spend $30 or $35 (I forget which). That’s not hard to do. Since last Nov, I’ve spent $20 on Amazon shipping. At one time, we watched prime video, but once they added ads, we phased it out. Don’t miss it at all.

I had Amazon Prime for a while. I bought it only to escape the constant deluge of “you need this” emails they sent me. Everything was OK for about 7 months, and then a new deluge of “You’re not using this feature” emails began. I ignored it for a while, then the frequency increased, so I wrote and cancelled the Prime altogether. I haven’t gotten any more emails from them since, but it has been only 11 months.

I shop Amazon although I’ve never been a Prime member.

It goes against my grain to pay extra month after month to be treated more favorably than other customers.

Any way these Prime sales are just a gimmick to get you to buy stuff impulsively that you probably don’t need in the first place.

Maybe folk are starting to realize they don’t need more stuff and they got more stuff on hand than they have a place to put the stuff.

I am thankful to Providence that I have the means to meet all of what are my true needs.

I've been really happy with my electric zero turn mower I bought a few years ago. It was time to replace my old riding mower anyway. Like you, I bought mine from Lowe's. No $100 annual oil, oil filter, and air slip change. No gas for mowing about 1 acre of grass (not counting the woods or the house) about 20 times per year. And no power added to my power bill because every week when I'm done I always plug it into a 120V outlet that's intermittently powered, only when my home solar batteries are charged enough to power the home without the grid.

Who cares if it's about to get dark that day and there won't be enough spare power to charge the mower's batteries? I don't need it charged again for another week. At some point over the next week I'll have plenty of sunlight to power that outlet and charge the mower by the time I have to mow again.

Is it authentic or fake?
