Amazon gave Prime Day a surprise makeover — but American shoppers clung to their cash.
Momentum Commerce, a major online shopping firm, reported a 41 percent plunge in Amazon sales compared to the first day of last year's event.
The firm's sales slump comes after Amazon extended its usual two-day price-cutting blitz into a four-day extravaganza.
Top bosses like CEO Andy Jassy and executive chairman Jeff Bezos bet that more time would mean more spending from inflation-weary shoppers.
But as the first day came and went, that calculation didn't seem to pay off — at least for one of Amazon's biggest sellers.
Momentum, which helps popular brands like Crocs and Therabody massagers sell on the platform, said it's still holding out hope that sales will pick up before the clock runs out.
'It all hinges on this four-day strategy being a success,' John Shea, the firm's top boss, told Bloomberg. 'Amazon sacrificed a lot on Day 1. It's a wildly unpredictable and uncertain year.
Amazon, for its part, pushed back on the downbeat numbers.
The company told DailyMail.com that Momentum's data doesn't reflect the broader success of Prime Day, noting the firm represents just 50 of the hundreds of thousands of sellers on the platform.
'We're pleased with customers' response to Prime Day so far and it is still early in the four-day event,' an Amazon spokesperson said.
Still, the firm's slow start comes at a time when American consumers continue to express worries about their personal finances.
Independent analysts told DailyMail.com that the weak Day 1 report may reflect a deeper issue: Americans' shaky confidence in the economy.
But it might be too...

Here we go again, Freeper Panican time
You're projecting. I am experiencing Bezos Schadenfreude.
I am shopping for heavily discounted movies. That’s about it. Not too many good ones though.
I’ve checked it out several times and they are only selling garbage that nobody wants.
I waited for Prime Day to purchase a wraparoud awning for my overlanding rig. It’s about $1000.
There was no prime day special, but the manufacturer had a good sale going on their site, so they got all my money.
Oh noes!
Amazon stock is up over $3 per share today.
Walmart and Target have competing sales this week.
You cannot buy something every day. Dang. This is as bad as those shopping channels on cable. I knew a lady that sat there all day and ordered stuff. Her house was full of junk.

I’ll be hiding in the bunker. Let me know when it is safe to come out. Oh noes !!!!!
What BS!
Essentially NOBODY is fearing a recession...
Obama taught us the correct signs of that kind of event...
95% of the amazon listed items are garbage.
I’ve discovered over time ...
Reading reviews, the five-star reviews are almost 100% good and posted within the last few weeks / month.
the one-star reviews span more like the last year or two. Bad reviews showing the products have failed badly.
Another big discovery in the one-star reviews are how many manufacturers deny warranty claims if you bought it on amazon !!
Another amazon failure is a shopper’s ability to find out WHERE IS THE ITEM MADE ? Where do the ingredients come from ? Much is hidden online from amazon.
Oh. I see. Your conclusion is based on a sample of one. I've looked at the Prime prices and two things emerge for me: 1) They're selling crap, which I don't need, and 2) the prices are still inflated.
what a teaming pantload
People are a bit turned off by Bezos lately. He’s a disgusting megalomaniac.
People are just not buying the hype about "sales" for things they just don't need.
Americans are tapped out.
United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has commented on Americans affording European vacations, stating that in the summer of 2024, a record number of Americans traveled to Europe.
However, Bessent also acknowledged a stark contrast, noting that while wealthy Americans were enjoying European vacations, there was also record usage of food banks, including a concerning increase in middle-class families needing assistance.
Yeah, American families are huddling together in fear of Trump depression coming soon. /S
But they took advantage of low gas price to drive their new SUVs to the beach after a nice restaurant lunch as they are sitting together watching the waves. 🏖️

Yes and no. Read my reply #18
