Top bosses like CEO Andy Jassy and executive chairman Jeff Bezos bet that more time would mean more spending from inflation-weary shoppers.

Americans are tapped out.

United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has commented on Americans affording European vacations, stating that in the summer of 2024, a record number of Americans traveled to Europe.

However, Bessent also acknowledged a stark contrast, noting that while wealthy Americans were enjoying European vacations, there was also record usage of food banks, including a concerning increase in middle-class families needing assistance.

I see a line of mostly new cars when the state food bank truck rolls into town. I see it as a bunch of people with enough money to buy food just looking for a freebie like food-sampling at Costco. But the food bank doesn’t care. The more they give away, the more they can inflate their budget requests for next year.
