Amazon gave Prime Day a surprise makeover — but American shoppers clung to their cash.
Momentum Commerce, a major online shopping firm, reported a 41 percent plunge in Amazon sales compared to the first day of last year's event.
The firm's sales slump comes after Amazon extended its usual two-day price-cutting blitz into a four-day extravaganza.
Top bosses like CEO Andy Jassy and executive chairman Jeff Bezos bet that more time would mean more spending from inflation-weary shoppers.
But as the first day came and went, that calculation didn't seem to pay off — at least for one of Amazon's biggest sellers.
Momentum, which helps popular brands like Crocs and Therabody massagers sell on the platform, said it's still holding out hope that sales will pick up before the clock runs out.
'It all hinges on this four-day strategy being a success,' John Shea, the firm's top boss, told Bloomberg. 'Amazon sacrificed a lot on Day 1. It's a wildly unpredictable and uncertain year.
Amazon, for its part, pushed back on the downbeat numbers.
The company told DailyMail.com that Momentum's data doesn't reflect the broader success of Prime Day, noting the firm represents just 50 of the hundreds of thousands of sellers on the platform.
'We're pleased with customers' response to Prime Day so far and it is still early in the four-day event,' an Amazon spokesperson said.
Still, the firm's slow start comes at a time when American consumers continue to express worries about their personal finances.
Independent analysts told DailyMail.com that the weak Day 1 report may reflect a deeper issue: Americans' shaky confidence in the economy.
But it might be too...

I’m sue that somehow AMZ will survive.
I didn’t buy a single thing on Prime day, but usually buy something just about every day, have a few things on autoship. Been at AMZ since Jeff was selling books out of his garage.

“Can we get a chance to meet Rosie O’Donnell over there? Please, can we? Can we?”
the one-star reviews span more like the last year or two. Bad reviews showing the products have failed badly.
You should always sort reviews by "Most recent". "Top reviews" are selected by an algorithm that pushes "helpful votes" that can be easily manipulated, among other things. It's also not uncommon for quality to dive once an item starts selling.
Recession fears? I think in all the years Amazon has had their prime days, I bought one item, a toaster oven, and only because the one I had, died on the same day as prime day. The reason I don’t buy anything on prime day is that I don’t need any of that shit. I don’t buy, just to buy something. I buy when I need to replace something.
Thank God consumers are not so conditioned into a Pavlovian response that they open their wallets and start buying just because Amazon creates an artificial buying holiday like Amazon Prime Day or Week or whatever. This restores some of my faith in humanity.
Got a few items that I needed, 50 amp voltage surge protector, Black water tank hose, fun stuff like that.
Yup. If they want to clear that garbage out of inventory they'll have to do better than that.
Seeming to be an attempt to desensitize folks to even looking at reviews anymore. I can never get to the end of the one-star without walking away from a possible purchase.
“I’ve checked it out several times and they are only selling garbage that nobody wants.”
Down in Florida that’s what the Publix weekly flyers look like now. Aldi’s lives on.
That was my first take too. Markets are up, inflation is down, jobs are up... Where's the fear?
has anyone seen a “must buy” prime day deal?
I have not.
I love the honest reviews that say “This is the best product ever. It does what it is supposed to do. I recommend this product.”
I own a small contracting company that provides what everyone would consider more of a luxury than a necessity.
This is looking like the first summer in a long time that is going to be very busy. Typically, late June through the beginning of September has been a nailbiter for revenue, but we’re killing it.
I would have been a panican had the big beautiful bill gotten sent back to the senate. Tariff policy is starting to show it’s benefit...taxes on small biz and individuals not going up...stockmarket playing with record highs..
calm down folks
So there’s that anecdote fwiw
“People are a bit turned off by Bezos lately.”
His powers of discernment are dreadfully flawed when it comes to women. It does make a person wonder...
No. I have too much extraneous stuff. I do not need more. We do buy a lot of health care and pet care stuff from Amazon as needed, though.
The real reason for Prime Day sales plunge is that the sales are really LAME this year. I’ve been checking Slick Deals for heads up on good Prime Deal sales and so far I’ve been UNDERWHELMED.
The real Drive-By Media fear is that they and the democRATS are shrinking in numbers* and influence. Their USAID slush fund is gone. (No doubt there are a myriad of other slush funds). When the democRATS and DemoKKKrats double down on hate (Ocrazio-Cortex, Jaz Crockfull, etc) it simply demonstrates who they really are, and who they have always been. Slavery, Jim Crow, KKK.
As their present day Brown Shirts BLM, Antifa are arrested for Federal crimes, they will experience Federal Prison.
We all knew that a huuuuge number of the illegal trespassers would self deport. The more the Leftist mayors of American cities double down on sanctuary, the more it seems President Trump is concentrating on those areas. Imagine the day when illegal trespassers will be afraid to go, stay in a sanctuary area!
Black men and Hispanic men voted for President Trump in unprecedented, huuuuge numbers. Both groups can definitely answer the question - What is a Woman?
**shrinking numbers - El Rush-Bo taught us well. Between 2010 and 2016, the democRATS lost 1,500 State and Federal elections. They are, at best, a noisy bi-coastal party. They had to cheat in 2020, and they could not cheat enough in 2024.
I did just get the Swiss Army Rescue knife/tool for my daughter to keep in her car. It was $42 cheaper than from the victorionix site.
People are a bit turned off by Bezos lately.
Certainly have seen too much of his wife of late .
Besos~Sanchez overdose similar to a Kardashian toxic reaction.
I was shopping for an electric mower. It was $599 on Amazon prime with free shipping. I checked at the local Lowe’s and not only was it the same price, but I got an additional free battery. The batteries are around $299. No vendor on Amazon offered a free additional battery. I think people are just becoming more discerning and checking local options.
