Retired Supreme Court Justice David H. Souter, the ascetic bachelor and New Hampshire Republican who became a darling of liberals during his nearly 20 years on the bench, has died. He was 85.
Souter died Thursday at his home in New Hampshire, the Supreme Court said in a statement Friday.
He retired from the court in June 2009, giving President Barack Obama his first Supreme Court vacancy to fill. Obama chose Sonia Sotomayor, the court’s first Latina justice.
Souter was appointed by Republican President George H.W. Bush in 1990. He was a reliably liberal vote on abortion, church-state relations, freedom of expression and the accessibility of federal courts.

“Is it because of the liberal atmosphere in Washington DC, the whole cocktail party thing, where they want to fit in?”
In some circumstances, I think you are correct.
Souter was a loner and a weirdo, probably gay, who lived with his mother. More like Norman Bates than anything.
He was a single gentleman living with his mother in a cabin, with an extensive public record in NH government and on the NH Supreme Court.
If all you remember is that he was a hermit, you don't remember much.
I think it is the same mentality displayed by RINOs when they get primaried or retiring. Since they do not have to answer to the “deplorable” conservative constituents, their true colors come out in force. The same with the justices. Once appointed to a lifetime gig with no one to answer to, their true self comes raging out of the closet.
The last Dem to appoint a conservative Justice was Kennedy appointing White.
It’s amazing, isn’t it, how many people here still fly the flag that the Reagan and Bush administrations were “our guys”.
Scratch an “I miss Rush” poster and GHWB will be under there, grinning out at you.
I have no comment.
Souter was treated medically for several days after being found assaulted (raped ?) in a downtown DC public “park” notorious for its homosexual “free zone” reputation.
While not “hidden”, circumstances behind this assault were deliberately “NOT COVERED” by the democrat party’sABCNNBCBS massed press corpse.
Yep, but H W Bush appointed Clarence Thomas.
Since I cannot say anything nice l will say nothing
🤷
*SHRUBS*
He was Bush Sr.’s stealth candidate. He didn’t have much of a record, but Sununu recommended him knowing his true beliefs. His worst opinion was about cops arresting people for things without jail time or something. I can’t remember the case but didn’t like the precedent.
I remember when both Barbara Bush and George HW Bush died, huge numbers of comments were deleted because they were so vile.
Never take a dump on the dead. Well, it's okay for folks like Mao and Hitler, but people like Souter?
What disgusts me is many that took shots at Souter's death are self-proclaimed Christians. Nothing is worse than that. It equals the loons at DU.
I wonder if now he gets to meet all the babies he helped kill with his abortion rulings
I will never ever forgive him for the Kelo decision. I was sorry they were unsuccessful in taking his NH home by eminent domain. Won’t be missed.
Lol
“Please provide evidence that David Souter ever “strayed” from any of his deeply held lifelong liberal priors. If a Republican President nominates a liberal, don’t complain that that liberal is “straying” or “betraying” principles he or she never held.”
My reference was in general, not a specific reference to Souter.
My “apologies” for not stating that specifically - although from history, more than one Republican President has been burned by one of their Supreme Court picks.
‘Whizzer’ White. He was runner up to winning the Heisman trophy.
The two most reliable conservative justices on the Court now are Bush appointees - Thomas (H.W.) and Alito (W.).
Dukakis or Kerry would have never appointed them.
Because Republican presidents pick the worst of the worst. It’s gotten even worse the last decade.
I’d like to read more about ‘former’ judges. We need more of them.
