BREAKING: EU offers 'zero -for-zero' tariffs to US, stands 'ready to negotiate'

On Monday, European Union leader Ursula von der Leyen has said that the European Union is ready to offer "zero-for-zero" tariffs in trade negotiations with the United States for industrial goods.

"We stand ready to negotiate with the United States. Indeed, we have offered zero-for-zero tariffs for industrial goods, as we have successfully done with many other trading partners, because Europe is always ready for a good deal," von der Leyen said on Monday.

This comes as the 27-nation bloc has been in talks to get the US to lower tariffs against the EU. The countries are facing a 25 percent tariff on steel and aluminum imports to the United States that go towards making cars as well as reciprocal tariffs imposed by Trump on various countries. The US president has also implemented a widespread 10 percent tariff on nearly all imports to the US.

"We need to remain calm and respond in a way that de-escalates. The stock markets right now show what will happen if we escalate straightaway. But we will be prepared to take countermeasures if needed to get the Americans at the table," Dutch Trade Minister Reinette Klever said on Monday, according to Reuters.

The meet-up took place in Luxembourg on Monday, where they discussed how Europe should react to the tariffs from the United States. Trump has previously said that the best way to get the tariffs from the US removed on the nations is for the EU countries to drop their own tariffs and trade barriers to the US, but some of the leaders are still floating ideas about retaliating to the US tariffs with more trade barriers.

French Trade Minister Laurent Saint-Martin said that everything should be on the table to retaliate to the tariffs, "We cannot exclude any options on goods or services and, however we approach it, open the box to the European tool which is very comprehensive and which can be extremely aggressive."

Other leaders were wanting to be cautious in how they dealt with the US.

The EU has numerous ways to discriminate. Were your chickens raised in cages? Did you use GMO chicken feed? Do you use hormones or antibiotics? Did you have an EU certified inspector in your processing plant? The list is endless. They’ll keep looking until they find a difference and it can be miniscule. Then they outlaw that thing.

My point, it’s more than tariffs.

Peter Navarro was on CNBC talking about how the zero-for-zero trade deals are a distraction because countries including the EU have non-tariff barriers for certain US Products.

The EU in particular has so many restrictions on US Agricultural products that even with ZERO tariffs the US won’t be selling any agricultural products in the EU.

Here’s an old article about how the EU keeps US chicken products out of the EU.

What about the EU safety regs? That’s how they keep a lot of our stuff out.

Fake offer. Fake news.

For Industrial Goods only. Not cars or anything actually imported from Europe.

Whole lotta economists doing a whole lotta math the world over right now and all coming to the same conclusion. They need us and in fact, it has been kind of lopsided.

We’ve paid for their increased socialism.

I literally followed your post by just a few minutes, you’ve said exactly what I have been saying.

Peter Navarro was on CNBC this morning talking about the same thing and that zero-for-zero trade deals are a distraction because countries have so many non-tariff trade restrictions on US products that removal of tariffs would not make that much impact.

Yep, I realize this is more a ploy on the EU’s part but Trump has already shown he is not taking the bait and Navarro has been pushing for more concessions than just 0 tariffs :)

This does generate more political clout for trump though and helps refute the media’s narrative.

Agree...same thing China has done for years.

Trade has to be FREE and FAIR.

Remember...we can do the same thing.

Steve Bannon on the War Room this morning was talking about possible sabotage from Republican Senators and that at least 7 have so far gotten behind trying to end the tariffs.

One of the things that Bannon said that worries me is that some conservative group probably the Heritage Group, is going to challenge Trump’s authority in court and to get some judge to issue a temporary restraining order to stop the tariffs and ultimately get them declared unconstitutional.
