Trump has turned his back on the foundation of US economic might - the fallout will be messy
BBC News ^ | April 6, 2025 | by Faisal Islam

President Donald Trump has built another wall, and he thinks everyone else is going to pay for it. But his decision to impose sweeping tariffs of at least 10% on almost every product that enters the US is essentially a wall designed to keep work and jobs within it, rather than immigrants out.

The height of this wall needs to be put in historical context. It takes the US back a century in terms of protectionism. It catapults the US way above the G7 and G20 nations into levels of customs revenue, associated with Senegal, Mongolia and Kyrgyzstan.

What occurred this week was not just the US starting a global trade war, or sparking a rout in stock markets. It was the world's hyper power firmly turning its back on the globalisation process it had championed, and from which it handsomely profited in recent decades.

And in so doing, using the equation that underpinned his grand tariff reveal on the Rose Garden's lawns, the White House also turned its back on some fundamentals of both conventional economics and diplomacy.

Perhaps there is some substance to the theory that the real objective here is to weaken the dollar and lower US borrowing costs.

For now, the US is checking out of the global trade system it created. It can continue without it. But the transition is going to be very messy indeed.

The USA is nearly $40 trillion in debt, mostly due to the immense trade imbalance. America has been subsidizing the entire world with unfettered access to our markets.

The parasite leaches are going to be weened off the tit, especially the EuroTrash who have gotten enormously fat and wealthy off the backs of the American working class.

Trump is bringing industry and manufacturing back to the US. The filthy European elites can embrace the suck. This is just the opening salvo. More pain is coming for them, much more.

--- "...the US is checking out of the global trade system it created. It can continue without it."

Given this is a COMPLETE lie, the entire weak-kneed whine is worthless.

Will the US trade with other nations? Yes. Will other nations trade with the US? Yes.

All that remains are Ts and Cs. As always.

The BBC is whining that UNEQUAL trade is being opted out of by the US, and that is neither a "checking out" nor a "global trade system."

Poor little once-great Britain is become as crybaby. With epaulets and medals....

How does the Beeb pretend to lecture Americans on the underpinnings of American economic might?

the US is checking out of the global trade system it created.

After WWII, the US decided to be the World's Policeman and protect all the "good people" with our vast military might. This was hugely expensive for us, but it did ensure that countries like Germany (especially) but also France and England didn't build big armies and navies and then go stirring up wars in Europe. Our allies were weak and therefore did not fight amongst themselves. That made a repeat of WWI or WWII unlikely.

Also, the vast US Navy kept the sea lanes open for global trade. Countries like China could import and export with confidence because the world had neither piracy nor troublesome blockades. Global trade was unimpeded for everyone, because the US spent money to make it so.

The US consumed goods from around the world, and also imposed policies at home that make it expensive to manufacture here, either through environmental laws, labor laws, taxes or other domestic regulations, it was cheaper to produce goods in Mexico, China, Vietnam or wherever. That boosted the world's industrialization. We lost good jobs, and we bought foreign stuff. Our vast economy helped the world, but hurt us in many ways.

Yes, the US created the global system. Now the realization sets in that we were hurting ourselves, and we've decided to stop doing that.

Translation: Your tariffs are protectionism. Ours are... uh... Well, ours are different. It’s different when we do it.

The only thing ‘messy’ is the globalist meltdown Pres Trump is causing, by MAGA and bringing wealth back to We the Taxpayers.

The most logical thing I’ve heard the last few days is if tariffs are so bad why do other countries charge them?

So the “foundation” of US economic might is slowly losing our manufacturing base due to unfair tarrifs? Yeah, sure, right...

The foundation on US economic night is letting every nation sodomize us with tariffs while having free access to America, taxing the living hell out of Americans while outsourcing their industrial jobs overseas to cheaper places.

Thanks for the advice Haji.
