White House office moves to limit union rights for federal employees

The memo cites authority issued under the 1978 Civil Service Reform Act, which Trump is also using to end collective bargaining agreements with federal unions that represent agencies with national security missions.

The White House Office of Personnel Management (OPM) on Thursday announced in a memo that President Donald Trump had signed an executive order limiting the ability of federal employees across multiple departments to unionize.

The memo cites authority issued under the 1978 Civil Service Reform Act, which Trump is also using to end collective bargaining agreements with federal unions that represent agencies with national security missions, per a White House Fact Sheet.

The order impacts all agencies within the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense, the Department of State, and the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Treasury Department, Health and Human Services, the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Science Foundation, the General Services Administration, and more.

“Consequently, those agencies and subdivisions are no longer required to collectively bargain with Federal unions,” OPM states in its memo, according to The Hill. “Because the statutory authority underlying the original recognition of the relevant unions no longer applies, unions lose their status as the ‘exclusive[ly] recogni[zed]’ labor organizations for employees of the agencies.”

The executive order has not officially been posted as of press time.

Someone up there read my tagline! I have had it for a while, modifying it after DOEd. was disbanded. Initially, my tagline was primarily aimed at schools, but lately all government labor unions. I say they have no legitimate use in government.

There’s a lot of government unions. The other agency that has a lot of different unions is the US Postal Service. Had a relative who retired from the military and went to work for the USPS. While he was at USPS, he naturally tried to get every thing completed by even crossing over into other employees jobs. He saw a job that needed to be completed. He did it. He was finally pulled aside by an employee who told him to knock it off. Quit doing other union members jobs. That wasn’t what he was hired to do. Left a lasting impression.

That means the Border Patrol Council won’t be recognized any longer as well. That may not be such a good thing.

There should be no government unions. Private unions are understandable in the tension btw the workers and management.

In a government union? The taxpayers are the management. WE are the people these unions oppose.

Public sector unions are a pet peeve of mine. It’s a custom made corruption with far too much influence on politicians who aren’t really the ones footing the bill for the generous wages and benefits.

None exist - only privileges.

It makes for a toothless, paper tiger.

I learned at an early age, if you show up on time, every day, do your job well, and have a good attitude, you don’t need a damn union. They are totally outdated.
Unions are there to collect dues, and enrich those at the top. They put on a show, defending the dead weight employees, who are, as a rule, worthless anyway.
That’s why government unions thrive...lots of dead weight. They should not exist.

Unions have been dying on some military installations for some time now - it/s one of the reasons It took me “only” 6 months to fire a couple civil “service” employees some years ago...
